  • Obituary of (Son) William Griggs Citing: James and Harriett Giggs and Conelia (Griggs) McIntosh (daughter of James & Harriet): The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal (NSW : 1888 - 1954) Fri 17 Jun 1949 Page 2 PASSING OF THE PIONEERS Obituary - William Griggs (Son): Details about parents James Griggs and Harriet Vidler Highlighted: Text: "Death has removed another of the fast-diminishing band of the Braidwood district's worthy old pioneers in the person of Mr. William Griggs, of Warri. He had been in indifferent health for some time and passed away on Sunday last at the age of 88 years.
The deceased was born at Durran Durra in 1860, one of a family of 10 children, of whom Mrs. Cornelius McIntosh, of Braidwood, is now the sole surviving member. His father, the late Mr. James Griggs, was one of the district's very early pioneers, a fine, straightforward, industrious man, who was born in Surrey (Eng.) in 1802. He settled at Durran Durra and set about establishing himself and making a home in virgin country and under conditions that would have daunted any but a man of exceptional courage. But these old pioneers were made of tough stuff and were not afraid of hard work. There was no 40-hour week then— and few diversions to take a man from his self-appointed task. It was work from daylight till dark. He married a Miss Harriet Vidler, who was born at Campbelltown in 1830.
