Biography

Mildred was born in 1772. Mildred Grigsby ... He passed away in 1850. [1]

Mildred "Millie" GRIGSBY52,72,95 was born on 7 May 1772 in prob. King George County, Virginia. The J. Henry Grigsby family did not arrive in Culpeper County, Virginia until 1785 She died on 8 May 1850 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. She was buried after May 1850 in Jones Family Cemetery, Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia.

Other records show her as Milly Grigsby; however, marriage records show her as Mildred. The IGI shows her both as Martha Grigsby and Mildred Grigsby. The Martha Grigsby, however, was not the wife of Henry Jones. She was born 19 Sep 1772 in Culpeper Co., VA married Alexander Trimble. She lived later in Rockbridge Co., VA., and died 4 Oct 1868.

Mildred G. Jones was buried on the Jones homestead in May 1850 and is listed on the opposite side of the tombstone erected for Henry Jones, Sr. The family cemetery is located in the backyard of "Meadow Grove", 1.2 miles south of Ben Venue off Highway 211. It is surrounded by an iron picket fence, and the tombstones are all readily readable. Photos were taken by Dallas Albert Johnson, her 3rd great grandson on 8 May 1995. The property with 102 acres was for sale in 2009.

Children were:

Frances (Katharine?) JONES. ii.

Bransom JONES was born on 25 May 1797 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. He was buried in Jones Family Cemetery, Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. He died befor 1840 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. He is not mentioned in his father's will. There is no date of death on his tombstone.

iii.

Elizabeth Ann JONES was born about 1802 in Culpeper County, Virginia. She died before 1866 in Howard County, Missouri. In the Will of Henry Jones, father, filed for probate 14 Jun 1852 in Rappahannock Co., VA. she is shown as Elizabeth Ann Pierce. In the will of her brother, Moses R. Jones ,27 Apr 1865, in Rappahannock Co., VA. she is only referred to indirectly, i.e. ("One of the said parts I give to the children of my sister, Elizabeth Ann Pierce...") This will probated 12 Feb 1866. In a Family Group Record submitted to the LDS, Salt Lake City, in 1950 by Walter F. Emmert of Parker, Colorado, the husband of Elizabeth Ann Jones was Robert Pierce. Further research is needed In Chancery Suit #421, Rappahannock Co., VA. she is named as a deceased daughter of Mildred Jones. This action was over the disposition of a 45 acre tract of land next to that of Peyton Anderson which Mildred had inherited from her father. (Henry Grigsby) See notes under Henry Grigsby. She is not given any land under this will. However, papers in this file indicate that Elizabeth Ann, who was dec'd, was the wife of Charles Pierce, and that the children, Richard Pierce, Elizabeth Ann Pierce, and Bransom J. Pierce, all under the age of 21, lived in Missouri.

The census of Rappahannock Co., 1850, under family #268, Robert H. Pierce is shown as age 51, with wife, Ann age 40, with children: Mary, 17, William 16, Jackaline, 14, Antonia (Ann?), 12, Elizabeth, 10, Margaret A. (Ada?) 4, and Sarah (Sallie?", 6months (as of 18 Sep 1850.

See also notes under Robert Pierce, RIN #1352.

iv.

Sarah S. "Sallie" JONES72 was born about 1804 in Amissville, Culpeper County, Virginia. She died in 1873 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. She was buried in Anderson Family Cemetery, 3 miles south Ben Venue, Hwy 729, Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virgini. In the Will of Henry Jones filed for probate 14 Jun 1852 in Rappahannock Co., VA. She is called Sarah Anderson. It is not likely that she is the same person who married John M. Blackwell 20 Sep 1843. Minister C. George at M. E. Church, Culpeper Cty. recorded 1 Jan 1844, The tombstones on the Payne Farm, 3 Mi. south of Ben Venue on Highway 729, indicate that Peyton Anderson, Sr. died in 1854, and that "Sallie Jones Anderson" is buried next to him. Their son, Peyton Anderson, Jr. was born 14 July 1837 and died 12 January 1914, and is buried there along with several other Andersons, Mrs. Ruth Anderson Settle and a infant child of Reid Slaughter. This farm is now known by the name "Locust Shade".

It is believed that Milton Baylis Anderson, the executor of the estate of Henry G. Jones, the brother of Sarah Jones Anderson, was also a descendant of Sarah Jones Anderson, and is her grandson.

According to James Fletcher Massie who was visited on 8 May 1995 by Dallas Albert Johnson at his farm on Battle Run just south of the Payne farm and on the south side of the bridge which crosses Battle Run on Highway 729, the land title of that farm runs as follows:

King George III Lord Thomas Fairfax 1739 1749 Robert James Compton Isaac Wall 1768 1765 William Roberts William Roberts 1772 1768 ! ! Jacob Wall 1772 Daniel Bradford 1826 Henry Jones Sr. 1833 Henry Jones, Jr. Moses R. Jones 1841 Eliza Anderson Foushee (daughter of Peyton Anderson) 1917 Wade H. Massie, Sr. Wade H. Massie, Jr. 1944 James Fletcher Massie 1957

Mr. Massie has a large farm at this location. He pointed out the location of several slave houses just north of the old homestead, and the Massie cemetery located on the knoll of a hill about 300 yards south of the homestead. He said that the slave houses had burned down many years ago, but one of them was still standing in a good state of repair (whether rebuilt of not was not asked). Mr. Massie (born 1930) is a descendant of Peyton and Sarah Jones Anderson, Sr. as well as the 4th great grandson of Heinrich Muller (Henry Miller I.) This farm is now known by the name of "Meadow Grove".

v.

Tabitha "Tabby" JONES was born on 15 June 1806 in Amissville, Culpeper County, Virginia. She died after 1840. She is mentioned in her father's will. There is no date of death on her tombstone. She was buried in Anderson Family Cemetery, 3 miles south Ben Venue, Hwy 729, Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virgini. !Source: Will of Henry Jones filed for probate 14 Jun 1852 in Rappahannock Co. VA. in which she is referred to as Tabitha Glasscock. See also her tombstone in the Jones family cemetery 1.2 miles south of Ben Venue on Hwy 211, in the back yard 14048 Lee Hwy. Her husband's grave is not in this cemetery but in the Anderson Cemetery on Hwy

Henry Grigsby JONES Jr. was born on 7 March 1812 in Amissville, Culpeper County, Virginia. He died on 22 November 1889 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. He was buried after 22 November 1889 in Jones Family Cemetery, Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. The will of Henry was Probated in Rappahannock County, Virginia on on 8 December 188996

This son of Henry Jones was also known as H. G. Jones and Henry G. Jones. It appears that his brother Moses R. Jones died without issue, and his estate was left to Henry G. Jones and to his nephews and nieces. No marriage is known to have taken place of Henry G. and anyone else. It is believed that he moved quite a number of slaves from Virginia to Lafayette Co., MO. shortly before the beginning of the Civil War, as in the 1860 census of slaves in Lafayette Co., MO. shows that an H. G. Jones owned 14 slaves in Dover Township, Lafayette Co. This census, however, does not list a Henry G. or H. G. Jones in Lafayette Co., therefore, it is assumed he remained in Virginia and sent his slaves to Missouri, where it is believed they were managed by James M. Grigsby, his first cousin, who in the same census is listed as owning 11 slaves in Dover Township. Additional source for Henry G. Jones was will of his father, Henry Jones, and will of his brother, Moses R. Also, censuses of 1850 and 1860, Amissville, Rappahannock Co., VA. p. 102, Family 260 and p. 181, Family 430. Also, will of Henry G. Jones with several codicils filed in Rappahannock Co., VA. 8 Dec 1889. See also census of Rappahannock Co. 1880, Family #109, he being 68 years old, with 8 servants. Next to him was "Austin" B. Jones, age 60, with Lucy A. Jones, age 52, and Branson G. Jones, 62, a Teacher, who was cited as a brother-in-law.

The middle name, Grigsby, is assumed as his mother's maiden name was Grigsby. It was a tradition in this family to pass down family names from one generation to another.

There is recorded in Fauquier Co., VA. 5 Apr 1845 a marriage of Catherine Jones to Isaac Embry, the bondsman being Henry Jones, the father of Catherine. There are at least two marriages recorded between Embry men and Grigsby girls. However, she is not mentioned in the will of Henry Jones, Sr. In the will of Henry G. Jones it is provided that $400 be set aside for the erection of "tombstones in the burying ground on the premises "occupied by me" (Henry G.) on the grave of himself and that of his father, mother, brothers and sisters, with the right of egress and ingress thereto, as a family burying ground; and that such right shall be reserved in any sale or disposition made of said property." On 8 May 1995 this "burying ground" was visited by Dallas Albert Johnson, 2nd great grand nephew, which was located in the back yard of the farm home of David L. and Dutchy Fannon, Amissville, Virginia. This farm is located on Little Battle Run about 1.2 miles south of Ben Venue (formerly Gaines Cross Roads on the west side of Highway 211, up a narrow dirt road through the woods to the top of the hill. The original house is still standing, the first section being built in about 1803 according to the Fannons. The Fannons related that Henry Jones, Sr. is alleged to have built homes similar to his own on adjoining hills for his daughters. The Fannons have owned this property, consisting of about 135 acres for the past thirty years. She is an antique dealer and has the house furnished with antiques, and she has an antique shop on Highway 211 near the road leading to the home on top of the hill.

Ben Venue is now a historical landmark and in 1981 was the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Eastham, the former Louise King, the great great granddaughter of William Fletcher.

vii.

Moses R. JONES was born on 13 August 1821 in Amissville, Culpeper County, Virginia.98 Date of birth inscribed, 1 Aug 1811, and the death 7 June 1866, as translated by Dallas A. Johnson.. Janelle Holmes from a photograph of the tombstone, interprets it as being Aug 13, 1821 as his birthdate.

In the 1850 Census for the Henry Jones family (p. 103, dwelling/household 260, the age for Moses is listed as 28, which would make him born in 1822, certainly not 1811 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Rappahannock County, Virginia.99 He died on 7 January 1866 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia.100 Date of death, inscribed, 7 Jan 1866. (transcribed by Janelle Johnson Holmes on 16th of September 1999)

As Moses R. Jones was still quite "young", could it be he served in the Civil War and was severely wounded? He was buried in "Meadow Grove", at Jones Family Cemetery, near Amissville, Virginia.

Moses R. Jones was unmarried and had no children. He had considerable property in Rappahannock Co. which he left to his brother, nephews and nieces. The will recites a tract of land in Georgia which he owned jointly with his brother, Henry G. Jones. The date of birth on tombstone was The middle initial "R" may refer to family name "Rosser" which appears in various generations of the Grigsby family.

Lucinda JONES was born about 1824 in Culpeper County, Virginia. She was actually probably 39, not 49, as the others living with her, actually, her step-children were in their 20s. The age given in the 1850 census with her father, as 28 is probably the more accurate, as she would not be able to have two children in their twenties in 10 years. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Tebo Township, Calhoun, Henry County, Missouri. 1860 Fed Census Tebo Twp Henry Co MO, P.O. Calhoun, pg 154 - Aug 20 1860 - D1056:F1056

Are these children of her husband's first marriage. She is listed in the 1850 census with her father and age 26, but Henry Jr's age is listed as 30, and was actually more like She died on 6 April 1878.102 Lucinda was buried in Askins Cemetery, Tebo Township, 1047 NE 701 Rd, Henry Co. Emmert, Parker, Colorado, to the LDS, Salt Lake City, in 1950 as being married to an "ASKINS", she being born in abut 1806. Other records seem to indicate that the daughter who married an Askins was Lucinda, who may be one and the same as Susan.
