Public Service

From the Private papers of Lawton K. Grimball:

Joshua Grimball was a planter on Edisto Island; a member of the Baptist Church, and friend of Rev. Isaac Chandler;

In 1738 he was one of the Enquirers for Edisto Island and his name is also mentioned in the statutes as one of those who took charge of the French Acadians, when those unfortunate people were sent to South Carolina. He was also one of the citizens of Edisto Island who had look outs appointed, under their direction for the enemy's fleet. He was excused from sending his negroes to work on the Watts Cut, because they were part of the force to work on the Haulover Cut. He was a commissioner for the latter work.

Property

Joshua Grimball obtained under his father's will a plantation of Edisto Island situated on Burned House Creek. It was a part of the plantation on which his father had lived.

Point of Pines Plantation was surveyed on the 29th of August 1746 by Henry Yonge, Depty. Surveyor, at the request of Paul Grimball. Paul sold the plantation to his son-in-law Jno. P. Grimke for £1600. In 1749 Joshua Grimball bought the plantation from John P. Grimke for £1600. He became a large land owner on Edisto Island owning nearly 4000 acres. On the 5th of March 1749 he was elected to Commons House of Assembly, but he declined to serve.
