Biography

Wamego, Kan. - Leland Bradford Grimes, 75, of Wamego, Kan., died Monday, July 19, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kan. Services will be at 10 am Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Wamego. The Rev. Robert Duncan will officiate. Burial will be at noon in Olsburg Cemetery, Olsburg, Kan. Visitation will be from 8 am to 9 pm Wednesday at the R.J. Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association. Mr. Grimes was born Oct. 27, 1917, at Manhattan, Kan., to William Bradford and Hazel Adel (White) Grimes. He was educated at Olsburg, and graduated from Olsburg High School in 1933. He attended Kansas State University, earning a bachelor's degree in teaching. He later earned a master's degree from Emporia State University. He taught in Kansas for 31 years, and was principal at several schools. He taught and lived at Pratt for seven years, then moved to Wamego in 1987. He retired from teaching in 1977. He was also involved in the dairy business, and was a cattleman up to the time of his death. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wamego and the Lions Club of Pratt. He was an avid supporter of Kansas State and belonged to the KSU Alumni Association. He married Katherine Piercy on March 7, 1940, at Manhattan. The couple later divorced. He married Geraldine Beisner on Aug 19, 1971, in Manhattan. She died February 1, 1984. His companion for the past nine years has been Charlotte Vinson. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Cook of Topeka, Kan.; three sons, Leland Grimes Jr. of Pratt, Kan., Gary Grimes of Olathe, Kan. and Greg Grimes of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one sister, Margie Plagmann of Capitola, Calif.
