Paybody Grinnell was born in Little Compton, Massachusetts Bay Colony to Daniel and Lydia Pabodie Grinnell. Birth or baptism records have so far been documented only for 2 of the 10 children born to this couple -- not including Paybody. However, 9 of their 10 children (including Peabody) were named in their father Daniel's 1741 will.[1] Estimates for the year of birth of Peabody/Paybody are especially divergent: 1684 ?[2][3] or 1687 ?[4] or 1698 ?[5]
First marriage and children
Paybody married Ruth Nettleton (1700-1732) April 8, 1718 in Old Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut.[6]
Paybody "departed this life August the 5th 1767".[38][39][40][41][42] The estate was distributed to "the widow", "Jasper Grinel the eldest sone", "Barber Grinel the 2 sone", "Pabody Grinel the 3 sone", "Jonathan Grinel the 4th sone", "John Grinel the 5 sone", "Ruth Stannard", "Lydiah Spencer", "Hanah Wise", "Sarah Redfield", "Elisabeth Tooley", and "Jemima Bush". Daniel and Samuel are documented to have died before their father. It appears that Sylvester had also died by the time the estate was distributed.
At a Guilford probate court in 1767 "John Grenel minor son of Pebody Grenel ... made choice of Sarah Grenel his mother of said Saybrook for his guardina ...."[43]
Guildford probate court records of 1780 (following the death of Peabody's 2nd wife Sarah) specify the same beneficiaries.[44][45]
