Biography

Christiana was a Friend (Quaker)

Christiana Groat Billings Hilborn was born on March 26, 1839 in Whitby Township; Ontario Canada to Henry S. and Mary Demeray Groat. At the age of six she and her family moved to Dorchester Township; Ontario where she resided until her marriage to Mr. Luther R. Billings on October 2, 1861. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Billings settled in Speaker Township; Sanilac County; Michigan. Mr. Billings enlisted in the Union Army and was killed December 30, 1864. On June 30, 1866, Christiana married Mr. Justinian Lansdowne Hilborn of Speaker. To this union were born the following children: Mary Viola; Sarah Marilla; Alveretta Geneva; Ella Lenora; Laura Effa and William Henry. Christiana died in January of 1923 at the home of her daughter, Effa Parkin, in Melvin, Michigan. She is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Melvin.
