Biography

Charles Groesbeck has German Roots.

Charles, son of [[Groesbeck-286|Alexander McCoy Groesbeck] and Emeline Holmes,[1] was born 12 July 1846 in Lee, Berkshire, Massachusetts.[2] He was raised in a large combined family in Lee, where his father was a carpenter.[3] The household in 1850 consisted of Charles's parents Alexander (age 38) and Emeline Groesbeck (36), Charles (4) and his siblings George (14) and John (6); his maternal uncle Charles (19, baker) and his wife Julia Ann Nickerson Holmes (17); Henry W. (39, papermaker) and his wife Marian Bond (37) and their children Henry W. (14), Mary (13), Caroline (11), Edward A. (9), Chester R. (7), Lacey (5), Melzar (1) and one-month-old Bersha Bond; and Thomas (39, papermaker) and his wife Sarah (31) and children George (7) and Mary Moran (1).[3]

The family remained in Lee in 1860, but no longer shared their home. Included in the household were Alexander (age 48, carpenter), Emeline (47), Charles (14), Mary A. (6), and Delia Groesbeck (3), as well as a nine-month-old George M Robey (no relationship is given).[4] Still in Lee in 1865, the family grew to include Alexander (age 53, carpenter), Emeline (52, laborer), Charles (18, soldier), Mary (11), Delia (8) and Franklin (5).[5] According to the Veterans Administration, he served during the Civil War in Company G, 1st Regiment Massachusetts Cavalry, 1 Brig., 2 Div.[6][7]

On 13 June 1866 at the Methodist Episcopal church in Lee, he married Clara Agusta Benton, daughter of Charles Benton and Belinda Sarah Cowles,[1][8] Together they had two daughters:

  • Emma L. Groesbeck (b. 29 July 1868;[9] m. John Henry Neumeister;[10] d. unknown). Children: Gertrude Emeline,[11] Lela May,[12] Charles John[13] and Zenas Franklin Neumeister.[14]
  • Grace A. Groesbeck (b. 17 November 1870;[15] m. Willis Casper Flansburgh.[16][17] d. February 1921).[18] Two daughters: Clara Julianna[19][8] and Miriam Flansburgh.[20]

By 1880 Charles (age 33) and Clara (32) are living in Dalton, Berkshire, Massachusetts, with their two daughters: Emma L. (11) and Grace A. (9).[21] Charles was a finishman in the paper mill. Grace married in 1889[16] and established her own household.

Charles (age 54, paper-mill foreman) and Clara (53) remained in Dalton, where 20 years later the household included their daughter Emma (32) and her husband John H. Neumeister (37, paper-mill calender) and granddaughters Gertrude E. (6) and Lela M. Neumeister (4).[22] This much of the family remained together in 1910—and grew in size. In addition to Charles (age 63, paper-mill foreman) and Clara A. Groesbeck (62), John H. (46, paper finisher) and Emma L. Neumeister (41) were added two grandsons to include children: Gertrude E. (15), Lela M. (14), Charles J. (9) and Lenas F. Neumeister (4).[23]

Clara died 1 December 1916 in Dalton from a cerebral thrombosis[8] and was buried there in the Main Street Cemetery.[24][8]

By 1930 Charles H. (age 83) is retired and living still with his daughter's family in Dalton.[25] He may have remarried as he is listed as "father-in-law" (but as widowed) and Fanny B. Hermance (59) as widowed mother-in-law.[25] The relationship is unclear. Also in the household headed by John H. Neumeister (66, paper-mill inspector) were Charles's daughter Emma L. (61) and granddaughter Leila M. Neumeister (34, paper-mill bookkeeper).[25]

Charles died 31 May 1934 in Dalton.[6]
