We know very little about this woman who gave birth to Henrietta Lowrie in 1866. Her daughter's birth record implies that she was married to Edwin Lowrie, but no record of their marriage is found. (It may be in New Orleans Catholic parish records which are neither online nor microfilmed.) She may have been been born at sea per the 1900 census record of her daughter. She either died by 1876 or her husband left her by that time (as he marries someone else that year). In any case, our only direct evidence of her is the 1866 birth record of her daughter. Outside of that record, she appears no where.
Researching her Origins
She is identified with at least three different names on the vital records of her daughter Henrietta Lowrie Albert:
New Orleans, Louisiana birth record indicates Henrietta’s mother's maiden name was Laura GROSCH.
Wedding record of Henrietta names her mother Henrietta GROCH.
Henrietta's death record calls her "Portense GROSCH;" the informant was Henrietta's husband.
Family legend refer to her as "Nettie Gooch". Kate (Albert) Bachmann claimed that her maternal great-grandfather (i.e., father of Henrietta) was a Van Grooch, sea captain. But Henrietta, sister of Kate, disagreed (not sure about what-- the name or the occupation?). There are GROSCH and GROCEs in New Orleans in 1850.
Her birth location is also variedly reported:
On census records, Henrietta's mother's birth place is listed as "at sea"
On Henrietta's death certificate, her mother's birth place is listed as "Germany"
There were two GROSCH families (possibly related) in New Orleans area at the time, part of a German emigre group that settled initially in Texas in an intentional community. But removed to Louisiana. NONE of these has a female family member of right age and name to be Henrietta/Laura/Hortense Grosch.

The Grosches may have belonged to the Catholic church (St. Louis Cathedral?) in French Quarter.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Laura-Henrietta by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with Laura-Henrietta:
