Obituary

Mary Anne Curran, age 87, of Fond du Lac, died on Saturday, October 18, 2014, in Fond du Lac. She was born on October 10, 1927, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Matthew and Frances Theyerl Gross. On February 22, 1947, she married Glenn E. Curran, Sr. at St. Patrick’s Church in Fond du Lac. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1996. She was a member of Holy Family Parish-Sacred Heart Church, and a previous member of St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Brandon. Mary was involved in several church activities, including Altar and Rosary Society, Daughters of Isabella, and the Golden Club. She was a very prayerful person, whose strong faith guided her through many a crisis. Family was extremely important in her life and she enjoyed spending time one on one and also at family gatherings. She was affectionately known as “Grandma Cookie.” Volunteering was one of Mary’s passions. She spent countless hours at various nursing homes, playing bingo, “with the old people.” She also worked monthly at the Honduran Mission Warehouse in New Holstein. She always sold poppies on Memorial Day for the American Legion and rang bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas time. She enjoyed baking cookies for the annual Beacon House auction. She was active in several organizations, including the Lady Eagles and the American Legion Auxiliary where she was Sergeant At Arms. She was an avid bowler for many years. Mary was a very giving person, who never missed sending a card for any occasion. Her family joked about her raising the stock at 50/50 Outlet Store because of the cards she bought monthly. She was an excellent cook, having worked over 55 years as a waitress/chef at many area restaurants. She was a very hard worker who began her career at the Beer Hut at the age of 15. She also worked at Dominic’s, the Elks, and retired from Schreiners in 1990. Mary enjoyed reading, country music, going out with the girls, the Green Bay Packers, and a trip to the casino, where if she didn’t win, she “always had fun though.” Though her eyesight began to fail her, her vision for the future was always bright and optimistic. Survivors include five sons: Bob (Peggy) of Phoenix, AZ, Jeff of Waupun, Tim (Linda) of Rosendale, Glenn Jr. (Brenda) of Ripon, and Edward (Vonnie) of Brandon; five daughters, Nan (Joe) Longo, and Kathy (Special Friend Randy Stoffel) Gregor, both of Fond du Lac, Lynn (Buddy) LeFever of Menasha, Patty (John) Walgenbach of Oakfield, and Mary (Curt) Rechek of Brandon, 28 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her son-in-law, Kevin Mengelt of Sun Prairie, and a brother, James Gross of Janesville. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Terrance, a daughter, Maureen Mengelt, and two grandchildren, Patrick and Angela.

Visitation for Mary Anne Curran will be on Thursday, October 23, 2014, from 4 to 9 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and again on Friday, October 24th, from 9 to 10 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 678 Western Avenue, Fond du Lac. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday at the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Additional information and guest book may be found at www.ueckerwitt.com
