Matilda was baptised on 5 January 1823 at St.Anthony, and lived at CarnVean all her life. In 1841 she was a lodger in the house of John Matthews 65 Independent at Chenhall Downs in Sithney, with Eliza Mathews 25 a milliner. In 1851 she lived with her parents at St Anthony. In 1891 she was an inmate of the Helston Union workhouse. She did not marry and died on 12 June 1910 in Helston Workhouse.[burial entry PR] Not found in the ledgers of the workhouse around 1910. A National Trust document dated 12 May 1893 concerning Carne Vean says “Henry Rogers of Helston, gent, registrar of Helston County Court, on behalf of Matilda Gross, owner of property being sold, “being of unsound mind (though not found so by inquisition) and an inmate of the Helston Union Workhouse”, to Arthur Tremayne of Carclew. "I remember father (Charles Bassett Gross) had two brothers and one sister- Matthew Bassett Gross; Samuel Gross; Matilda Gross, died an old maid. They lived on the coast of Cornwall in an old home called Carn Vean." [Mrs.Culver]
