Biography

son & heir of David Grosse, grandson of the infamous Ezechiell Grosse, he inherited his grandfather's great estates in 1631. He thus became one of the eight richest men in Cornwall. [Anne Duffin, Faction & Faith, Politics and Religion of the Cornish Gentry before the Civil War.] H During the 1630s he sold much of the land in West Cornwall purchased by his grandfather in the 1610 and 1620s. This was a time of highly competitive sales of leases, especially three life leases, commonly estimated at 21 years. [The Life and Times of Ezechiel Grosse gent, attorney at law and money lender, a study in Cornish Economic and Social History 1580 –1644, based on the Grosse Papers in the Henderson Collection, BA dissertation 1956 by JT McCabe, copy at RIC] Ezechiell made an excellent marriage to Margaret da. of William Coryton of St.Mellion & W.Newton Ferrers esq. on 8 September 1631 at St.Mellion [PR St.Mellion]. Margaret was baptised at St.Mellion on 12 September 1613 of William and Elizabeth Coryton (daughter of John Chichester of Raleigh in Devon). William Coryton was Ezechiel senior’s friend and executor in 1631. They lived at Golden. Ezechiel Grosse esq., William Coryton esq., Nicholas Trefusis esq., and William Coisgarne gent. Made a bargain and sale in 1632 to Thomas Ceely of Plymouth for yards in Avalsa alias Lavalsa at St.Ewe. The same four men inherited a tenement and grist mill called Loer Mill alias New Mill, in Veryan, which they conveyed to Henry Hellyer in 1635. [CRO ref X358 /1] On 15 Oct 1636 Ezechiel Grose to Nicholas Webb gent of Landulph one fifth of Bosower Antell and the stamping mill there. [RIC –HC/16/14] On 20 May 1637 Ezekiel Grose of Golden Mill, Probus and William Grosse of Trekobayes contracted re court and wharf in Penryn called summer court. [HB/10/1 1254/119 & 120][RIC –HC/16/209] Ralph Williams died overseas, Admon to Ezekiel Grosse esq. Creditor 8 January 1636, p146 PCC Admon. Hon.Lady Elizabeth Hunsdon als Enare, formerly wife of Sir Ralph Enare, St.A. Blackfriars, Lord. Adm.de bonis non to Ezekiel Gross grandson.ex.son & legatee of Ezekiel Gross, creditor vice Lady Elizabeth Barclay his daughter deceased, 28 February 1639 p15, prev. grant (under Enare) MCI 1618 p163. will dated 19 July 1634 buried 3 October 1644 at Probus [Probus PR] will of Ezechiell Grosse of Golden esq sound in body & minde To Margaret my wife all my Barton & Mansion of Golden als' Wolverdon & lands called Trewarris als' Treguerris Halbot & Golden Lane & enclosures & moors which John Dyer of Probus holds by lease --to hold as jointure --rem. To Charles Grosse my son & heir --If he die sp rem: to my other son I may have, rem: in default to Elizabeth Grosse my daughter & her heirs John Coryton esq my brother in law is to convey and purchased in his name or in that of John Eva of Camorne -- to my second son Christopher --remainder the sd Elizabeth. Wm B of Hollywood esq Thos Grose gent my brother are to do the same with the lands I purchaseed of John Malsay in their name Lady Grace Hals is not to be cheated of her annuity if £174 & John Hancock of Rob of his £8 annuity...etc Edward Grosse of Truro my uncle, Thomas & Chris Grosse my brothers Eliz Lewer sister. [Henderson Mss p 190 No.469 19 July 1644] proved 4 November 1644. Administration granted to his father. To his brother Christopher he bequeathed his “house in Marketjew wherein David Grose my father dwelte.” To his nephews David and Thomas, sons of brother Thomas, he left £10 each when twenty-one. To his sister-in-law Frances Coryton £50. His father-in-law was trustee with his brother-in-law John Coryton, his uncle Edward Grose of Truro, brothers Thomas and Christopher, Renatus Bellet of Bochym and cousin Hugh Pawley of Lelant. All of his children except Elizabeth died as children unmarried. Charles buried 25 June 1643. Ann buried 23 Jan 1642. Margaret born 1642 buried 10 April 1643 and Christopher date not known but before the sister Elizabeth married. [Probus parish register]
