Biography

William Grosse merchant of Yarmouth (circa 1525 –1575). First wife was probably Margaret or Martha, judging from naming patterns and his father’s will. His second wife was Cecily Fink who he married in Great Yarmouth on 22 May 1559 [PR][Boyds] PCC will proved 2 April 1576 In the name of God amen the fifth daye of June anno domini 1575 I William Grosse of greate yarmouth in the countie of Norfolk merchante being sick in bodye but thankes be god perfecte of memorie do make and ordeigne this my present testament declaringe in yt my last will in manner and forme followinge renounceinge and revokeinge all other wills heretofore by me made ffirst I bequeath my soule to almightie god my maker redeemer and saviour hopeing to be saved by the m death and passon of Jesus christ and my bodie I committ to the earth to be buried in the Church yard within the town of great yarmouth aforesaid Item I will my house being in the north and in the town of great yarmouth late Johanne Grosse my mother’s to be sould by my executors to the performance of the last will and testament of the said Johannne Grosse and the Legacies and bequesths of the same will performed of the overplus of the same monnie I will and bequeath unto Cecillye my wife tenn pounds and unto Margarette Tungate my other wife daughter x lb and unto Anne Harbord x lb and unto Thomazine Ethard (Echard?) my daughter’s child fortie shillings and unto Cecillye Grosse my son’s daughter I give xlb and unto William Morante and Susan Morante my wife children to either of them I give xlb Item I will that the house that I dwell in with all the and appurtenances to be sold by my executors and of the monie thereof coming I give and bequeath unto my sonne John Grosse tenne pounds and unto William Grosse I give tenne pounds and unto George Grosse I give tenne pounds and unto Edmonde Grosse I give tenne pounds and unto Mary Grosse Anne Gross and Margery Grosse my daughters to everie of them I give xi lb xiiij s iiij d & Item I give and bequeath unto Thomas Grosse and John Grosse my sonnes my boate called The William with all her apparell and tackelling to her belonging Item I give unto my said sonne John Gross tenne perch of herring nette with three of my biggest waropes this is to say ij cable lay waropes and one warope laye warope Item I give and bequeath unto Cecillye my wife my small fisher boate called the Cecille with all her apparell and tacklinge to her belongine with xxxiiij perch of markewell nette and all the belonging to the same markwell nette Also I doe give unto the said Cecilye my wife tenne pairs of marchwell nette and all the wainnies belonging to the same warkwell nette and also I do give and bequeath unto the said Cecillye my wife all my implements and stuff of whatsoever Item I will that if either of my three sons of William George and Edmunde do departe this life before their ages of xxi years that then I will the part and partes of him or them so deceased to remain to be equally divided among my three daughters Mary Anne and Margerie not to receive their legacies until their ages of xxi years or their day of marriage and that if any of my said three daughters happen to dye before their said ages or their day of marriage then I will the survyvor of them to be other share Item I will that Cecillye my wife shall release all her dower and interest of and in all and singular my house landes & tenements whensoever she shalbe thence resonably required by my executors or any one of them I will that the said Cecillye my wife shall not enjoy any portion of that legacy or bequeast her in unto her given or bequeathed Item I will that if Thomas Grosse my sonne will have my house that I dwell in I will that he shall have the same house with all the edi appurtenances in fee simple to him and his heirs forever paying for the same the some of xxiiij lb in manner and forme following that is to say within one quarter of a year next after my decease xx lb and so forth every year from thenceforth every march until the said some of xxiiij lb aforesaid be fully paid and the last payment to be twentie nobles and for the securitie to be paid in manner and forme aforesaid anye former articles or transferences in this my will to the convenyer also I give unto the poore people of yarmouth twenty shillings to be distributed at my buriall All the residue of my goodes chattells plate I will and al other thyngs whatsoever not herein ginine nor equeathed i putte to the goode discretion of my executors whom I ordeign and make Thomas Ernwald Thomas Grosse Also I make my brother John Grosse supervisor of this my lastt will and testament requiring my executors to see this my will performed according to my meaninge as they will answer at the last day as in that this is my last will I have hereunto set my hand and seale their being witnesses William Echard and William Smythe the writer witness Wm E Wm S no others
