1754 -- Hilkiah and Submit Hawkes Grout moved to the part of Hinsdale, Cheshire County, New Hampshire that was west of the Connecticut River. [9] In 1764 the Connecticut River was made the western boundary of New Hampshire, making Hinsdale, New Hampshire now Hinsdale, Windham County, Vermont. In 1802 the town was renamed Vernon, Windham County, Vermont. [10]

July 27, 1755 -- Twelve Abenaki Native Americans ambushed Hilkiah Grout, two other men, and three older boys while they were returning to their fort at Vernon, Vermont from working in their cornfields. Hilkiah Grout escaped by swimming across the Connecticut River to get help from Fort Hinsdale, New Hampshire. [11]

Later that evening the Abenaki tricked the women into opening the gate of the Vernon fort. The Abenaki then took the three women and eleven children captive, plundered the fort then set the fort on fire.

The Abenaki marched their captives across Vermont's Green Mountains to Crown Point, New York on Lake Champlain. They then sent their captives to Montreal, Quebec to be sold into slavery to the French. The Abenaki could not find any French who wanted to buy any of the captives so they took their captives back to Crown Point with the exception of the youngest girl who was given as a gift to the French Governor de Vaudreuil. [12]

The Abenaki took their captives from Crown Point to St. John {sic} [Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec was known as St. John to the English in colonial times. It is on the Richelieu River that flows north out of Lake Champlain eventually into the St. Lawrence River north of Montreal]. At St. John the Abenaki hastily sold Mrs. Jemima Howe. [13].

The Abenaki took the remaining captives, including Submit Hawkes Grout, north up the Richelieu River to the Abenaki village at St. Francis [14] (also known as Saint-Francois-du-Lac or Odanak) at the confluence of the Saint Francois River and the St Lawrence River. [15] [16]

The Abenaki sold Submit Hawkes Grout and Martha Grout to a French gentleman LeRoy DeMille. They worked for DeMille as household servants for three years. Hilkiah Grout Jr. and Asa Grout were taken to Native Americans/First Nations in the St. Francis region. [17]

October 9, 1758 -- Colonel Zadoc Hawkes submitted a petition to the Massachusetts General Court (legislature) paying it to request the release of his niece Submit Hawkes Grout. General Israel Putnam and others contributed the ransom. Sometime during the Spring of 1759 Submit Hawkes Grout came home though she had to leave her children (Hilkiah Jr., Asa, and Martha) in Canada. [18]
