William Eugene Grove was born in Worcestershire, England in April of 1846. After immigrating to the United States, he married Lucy Painter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania sometime around 1867. He died in Washington, D.C. on October 1, 1922. [1]

"THE COURTS - Court of Oyer and Terminer - The Temperanceville Homicide - Acquittal of the Defendant." Pittsburgh Daily Post, February 3, 1869. Page 1. There was a jury trial for the case of William Grove's killing of John Dearr in the early morning of Sunday November 15, 1868. James Painter and Sarah Ann (Jones) Painter each testified. William Grove was acquitted of all charges.
In the inquisition, William Grove stated that "My name is William Groves; I came to this country from England three years ago, and was employed at Park's Steel Works, in the Twelfth ward, up to about five weeks ago. Two weeks ago I removed, with my family, consisting of a wife and one child, to Temperanceville, where I have since resided in a housing adjoining one occupied by my father-in-law, Mr. Painter."

Pittsburgh Daily Post, November 16, 1868. Page 1. William Groves shot and killed John Dearr, a man who was trespassing on the property of William Grove and James Painter, Sr. at 1:30 in the morning on Sunday November 15, 1868. Several members of the Painter family testified on William's behalf at the Coroner's inquisition on November 16, 1868, including James Painter, Sr., Sarah Ann (Jones) Painter and Lucy (Painter) Grove.
