Garrett was born in 1836. He was the son of John Grovesteen and Elizabeth Cromwell. The 1850 US Census finds Garrett living in Charlton, Saratoga County with his parents and 6 siblings at the age of 15. [2].
The 1865 New York State Census states Garrett and both parents were born in Dutchess County, as were John C 27, James H 22, and Cleveland C 19. Also, he, his father and brother Harvey were listed as soldiers. Siblings that weren't born in Dutchess County were Harvey 25 yo, born in Schoharie County and Alexander 17, Eleanor 14, Mary F 12 and Isaac H 9, the latter 4 all born in Saratoga County, (these data indicate a move to Saratoga County between 1846 and 1848)[3].
He married Minerva Huntley 7 Nov 1865 in Amsterdam New York. Note the reference that he was from Florida. Florida, NY is in Orange County, just to the southwest of Dutchess county [4]
Garrett was in the 77th New York Infantry, company H from 27 Nov 1861 to 27 Nov 1864 [5]
The 1875 New York State Census reports he was 38 and born in Dutchess County New York [6].
