Henry Grow was born in Gallia County, Ohio, 1843, son of George Grow and Susan Daft and grew up in Cass County, Indiana, where his parents settled when he was about five years old. Henry enlisted in Company E, 29th Indiana Infantry in September 1861 and served as a private during much of the war. His military records states that he was six feet, one inch tall , had blue eyes and light brown hair. Henry was discharged in October, 1864 and after the war settled in Jasper County, Indiana, where his mother and step-father had established themselves. He married in 1872 and soon after purchased a farm in Marion Township, near the town of Rensselaer. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans organization, and in his old age applied for and received a pension for his service in the Union Army. It appears that Henry added the middle initial "J." to his name as an adult.
