Louis Grow (Grau) was born in 1845, in Hanover, Germany in the Harz Mountain area. He was the son of Christian Grau and Johanne Meissner.

He married Martha Keam in 1866, in the presence of her father, James Keam, in Kooringa, South Australia, Australia. Their second witness was Hannah Keam. [1]

He married Mary Jane Tilling in 1886, in Redruth, Burra, South Australia, Australia. [2]

XI.901.5 November 1889, page 2 - Accidents: A child of Charles Rawling of Aberdeen is recovering from drinking carbolic acid and a child of Mr Hammer of Bridge Street East was rescued unharmed after falling 30 feet down a well on premises of Mr Grow.

The horses made good time across the bridge and went via Bridge Terrace to Bridge Street East and pulled up at the gates of their yard.

Taken from Burra Record, December 1933: Newspaper Article headed 'An Octogenarian Birthday - A Happy Family Re-Union': "The home of Mr and Mrs Grow, Kooringa, is situated in a cosy nook, unique for its situation, amidst bright beds of flowers, with English ivy growing in great profusion and this with the fruit trees, helps to form a good break from the weather, and with the song of the bird-life that they love so much, it helps to make the home one of rest, pleasure and peace. It was here on December 2nd that Mr Louis Grow celebrated the 88th anniversary of his birthday. Both Mr and Mrs Grow were quite up to their usual good spirits among their family and town relatives that came, some by two cars and the balance by train. Congratulations came from the Mayor and Mayoress of Burra, also from Mr and Mrs Sam Baker, as well as from the Misses Baker (2). A number of visitors kept dropping in during the day. The special visitors from the city were their relations as follows: Mr and Mrs Alf Hann, daughter, Payneham; Mr and Mrs Winifred Grow, son, Balhannah; Mr and Mrs Hilton Grow, son, Unley; Mr and Mrs Ray Hann, grandson, Balhannah; Ron and Patty, great grandchildren, Payneham; Len and Will Grow, grandson, one grand-daughter, Myrle, Balhannah; also Mrs J Rodda, Unley. Other visitors were Mr and Mrs O Walker, Mrs Roy Bunney, Mrs Bert Sugars, Mrs S Timms, Mrs J Parks, Mr and Mrs Clem Sumpson, Rev. and Mrs Hutchinson and Mr James Thomas. Many useful presents were received. The tables were well laden with dainty and appetising good things, including fruit from the city, in addition to the birthday cake was a special from Mr and Mrs H Grow, Hyde Park, with 88 candles, of various colours, these were lit by Mr Louis Grow, assisted by two of his grandsons and one great grandson. Needless to say that both Mr and Mrs Grow were very happy with their relatives and friends rallying around them to do honour to their respected parents and a most respected and well-known pioneer and townsman of Burra on his 88th birthday. They were also the recipients of numerous congratulatory messages".

Louis was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Kooringa, SA. He stated in his naturalisation documents that he lived in Kanmantoo, Hahndorf (5 years) and Kooringa, Burra, South Australia.

He passed away in 1934, aged 88 years in Kooringa, Burra, South Australia. [4]

Obituary - Louis Grow: A very old link with the past was severed on Tuesday night last when another of our fine old pioneers, Mr Louis Grow, passed peacefully away at the age of 88 years and nine months. The deceased gentleman's association with Burra was long and honourable and dated back no less than 86 years. He was born in Hannover Germany on 2 December 1845 and came to Australia with his parents as an infant later coming to Burra. Mr Grow could recall some very interesting facts about the early days of the state and our old mining town as his memory and mentality were remarkable and which he maintained right up to the hour of death. Before retiring from business, Mr Grow carried on the occupation of carrier and was noted for his marked integrity in all his dealings. After his retirement he continued to take a keen interest in matters and his well known upright, spick and span personality was frequently to be seen in the town or taking in his daily walk to which the latter exercise he often said he owed his remarkable health. The few months his heart failed him and he seldom went far from home and later when compelled to take to his bed, bore his suffering with great fortitude. He was a member of the Kooringa Methodist Church and a fine Christian character. He was twice married. The surviving children from his first marriage are Messrs Charles Grow of Perth, Will Grow Melbourne, Chris Grow Boulder WA, and Fred Grow of Port Pirie; twos Tom Nicholls of Croydon and Alice of Payneman. In 1889 he married the second time and besides the widow there three surviving sons of that marriage namely Messrs Alfred Louis (Wilfred) Grow Balhannah, Hilton C Grow of the Detective Force Adelaide, and Phillip Arnold Grow of the Mounted Police Farina. There are 28 Grandchildren and a number of Great-Grandchildren. The funeral took place at Kooringa Cemetery on Friday afternoon when the Rev GC Hutchinson conducted the service and the bearers were members of the Oddfellows Lodge of which Mr Grow was a very old member. They were Messrs S Kellaway, Lance Tiver, WH March, A Lommon, Robert Fuss and Alwin T Pearce. The lodge service was read by Mr Kellaway.
