Biography

"Educated at Horton College, Ross, he was articled to his father and to the Hobart firm of Allport, Roberts & Allport. In 1867 he went into partnership with his father and carried on the practice alone from 1874 when his father retired; in 1884 he disposed of it to W. Martin and F. C. Hobkirk. In the Legislative Council he succeeded his father as member for Tamar in 1879 and in 1881-1911 represented Meander." He also carried on his father's investments, in particular the Western Silver Mine in Zeehan but also including investments in the agricultural industry. "In 1871 Frederick married Alice, daughter of Edward Archer, Northbridge, Longford; they had a son and a daughter. Alice died on 14 October 1877, and on 3 December 1879 he married her cousin Isabel Madeline, daughter of Joseph Archer; they had one daughter. He died at Launceston on 28 April 1923" [1]

DEATH: HON. F. W. GRUBB. The death occurred at Launceston on Saturday of the Hon. Frederick William Grubb in his 79th year. Until a few days ago deceased had enjoyed quite good health, but during last week he developed pneumonia, to which he succumbed early on Saturday morning. He was the eldest son of the late Hon. William Dawson Grubb, of Newnham hall, and was bom in 18-11 at Launceston. After having been educated at Horton College, Ross, he was articled to his father (who was a member of the legal profession, and was afterwards a member of the Legislative Council) for a period of five years, the latter period of 1» months being served with Messrs ?Vllport, Roberts, and Allport, of Hobart. At the conclusion of his training he joined his father in practice at Launceston, and afterwards carried on the business by himself until about l8 years ago, when be sold out to Messrs. Martin and Hobkirk. On his father's death in 1879 Mr. Grubb succeeded him as a member of the Legislative Council on March 6 of that year, being returned for Tamar unopposed. He was elected to represent the Meandor electorate on February 12, 1881, and retained the seat until 1911. Mr. Grabb also took a great interest in mining pursuit«, being a director of the Tasmania gold mine. Beaconsfield, and he was also a director of the Western silver mine, Zeehan.
