Research Notes

The profile stated that he married a woman named Elisabeth on 31 Aug 1790 in Rockingham County, Virginia. This is unlikely because their children were born in the early 1770s.

The middle name "Alonzo" (sic) that previously appeared on this profile has been removed. The person using this middle name lived 100 years later than Daniel b.1738 (Entrikin-5 15:40, 29 February 2024 (UTC))

The following appears to be the Civil War record of Daniel, Jr.: Name: Daniel A Grubbs [Daniel Alphonzo Grubbs] Residence: Occupation: Laborer Rank at enlistment: Private State Served: Virginia Survived the War?: Yes Service Record: Enlisted in Company D, Virginia 44th Infantry Regiment.Mustered out on 11 Apr 1864.Transferred to on 11 Apr 1864. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:

Based on the baptism records and Research Notes, there is noevidence of a middle name of Alonzo. It seems to me that the name Alonzo should be removed from this profile.

This profile seems to be a mixture of two different Daniel Grubbs; one from a part of Augusta County, Viriginia that became Rockingham County, whose parents are Christian Grubb and Rosina Kipp, per his 1738 birth record and 1762 baptismal record at the age or 24, in that county, and one from St. James Parish Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, who was the son of Andrew Kroff/Grubb as identified by Andrew Grubb’s 1780 Goochland County will and a 1755 land purchase in St. James Northam Parish by Daniel, Andrew, John, and Anne Grubb. (Goochland Deed/Will Book, No. 6, p.452, familysearch.org)

Daniel of Rockingham’s wife is identified as Elisabeth in both the 1775 baptismal record of a daughter, Mary Catherine, in Peaked Mountain Church of Rockingham and the application for SAR member 59548 that specifies a son, Daniel, 1772-1851, who married Mary Armentrout. “The Historical Register of Virginians in the revolution” source on this profile states that a Daniel Grubb from Rockingham served in Peter Hogg’s Rangers with a Peter Armentrout. This profile lists a DOD for Daniel of 2 Nov. 1815 in Rockingham which I was unable to confirm but did find an entry for Daniel Grub for 1792 in book 1, page 6b in the will index for Rockingham at familysearch.org. Unfortunately, I struck out when I went looking for the will itself to confirm. Can someone help?

Daniel of Goochland’s wife is identified as Mary in his 1800 Goochland will with daughters: Sobriana Grubb (at home), Mary (at home), Franke (at home), Martha (at home), Ann Thacker, Nepha Chaetham, Sarah Prophet, Susannah Grubb; sons: Jesse, John, Edward. Daniel’s son, Jesse, is also mentioned as a grandson in Andrew Grubb’s 1780 Goochland will. Given Daniel's location in Goochland in 1755 and his death there in 1800 I would conclude he is the Daniel Grub that married Mary Hodges on May 6, 1757 in Goochland. Their marriage record in “The Douglas Register” p. 68 found at ancestry.com states that they are both from St. James Northam Parish. The Find a Grave profile for Daniel Grubb matches the 1800 DOD and gives his burial place as Louisa County, Virginia, adjacent to Goochland County.

There is a separate profile, Grubb-1141, where the Goochland related sources have been gathered. I’d like to propose that the Goochland sources be removed from this profile, the bio purged of them, the children matching Daniel of Goochland’s will moved to Grubb-1141 and Mary Hodges removed as the wife of Daniel of Rockingham.

I look forward to your comments, Beth

Sounds good Beth, can you please effect the required changes.

I've moved the children and divided the sources into the correct Daniel's profile. It won't let me removed Mary Hodges as spouse of Kropf-69 because of the project protection. Can you do this?

I'll initiate a merge of the two Mary Hodges profiles and let the other project manager approve. Let me know if you'd like me to add inline source formats on Grubb-1141 to make it consistent.

EWK,

I can appreciate the incredibly detailed work that you have put in to identify and separate two combined identities, as I have done several similar. One of my first was a triple, took me a year. Many thanks for preservering. I know it is daunting and the few who recognize combined identities often shrink from the amount of work it takes, not to mention potential backlash from collaborators who disagree and the continuing maintenance needed to keep them separate. I hope it will be some comfort to you to know that some descendants will be thankful that the confusion has been cleaned up and will, in turn, clean up their trees. This kind of work really raises the standing and reputation of WikiTree above so many other tree building sites. Thank you.

Hi Elizabeth, thank you so much for your work here. I've removed the marriage between Kropf-69 and Mary Hodges. Yes, please continue this great work on Grubb-1141. -William

Lisa, would you please provide details on your sources alluded to in the bottom of the profile? I'm thinking there are two different people being conflated here.
