Thomas Grubb was the second son, the first of two to have that name, of Thomas Grubb and his wife Susan Hart. He was baptised on 8 May 1594 in Devizes, Wiltshire, England.[1]
On 16 June 1610, aged 16, he matriculated at Queen's College Oxford, where he took the BA degree on 1 March 1613/14. He then took the MA degree from St Edmund's Hall on 20 June 1616. He was incorporated at Cambridge in 1619, when he became Rector at the church of St Peter and St Paul at Cranfield, Bedfordshire. He held this benefice until his death in 1652 and was buried there on 2 September. [2] [3] [4] [5]
Thomas Grubb's wife was probably Jane, and their marriage some time before 1625, when their eldest child was baptised. As minister at Cranfield [5] he recorded the baptisms of his children in the parish register:
The burial of Mrs Jane Grubb, probably his wife, was recorded in the register on 15 May 1636 (p. 62). His own burial, dated 3 September 1652, was also recorded (p. 64).
A monumental brass marks his burial place in the chancel::Here lyeth interred the body of Thomas Grubbe, a pious and painefull preacher and pastor of the word of God 33 years in this parish. He was aged 58 yeares and deceased the 31 of August 1652; the God of peace lent us this man of peace, who preached the peace of God till his decease ; blessings and virtues here doe lye, examples for posteritie ; his charitye did all ye poor supply ; he lived beloved and much bewailed did dye.[6]
In the 1646 Will of his mother Susan Grubb, she left bequests to his children, £100 apiece to Susan, Thomas, Jane, and John. [7]
Thomas Grubbe had his will drawn up on 23 Jun 1652. He described himself as the parson of Cranfield in the county of Bedfordshire. [8]
In this Will, he made bequests to his daughter Susan Baker and her husband George, [9] to his unmarried daughter Jane Grubb, and to his son Thomas Grubb, whom he named executor of his Will. His son John, named in the 1646 Will of his mother Susan, appears to be deceased.
The Grub Pedigree in the Visitation of Wiltshire in 1623[10] was recorded by John Grub of Poterne, Wiltshire, the son of Thomas Grubb of Poterne and Susan, daughter and heiress of John Hart esq. of Bristol. John had three brothers: Henry, Thomas and Thomas. John was married to Jenevara, daughter of Thomas Baskerville of Rickinson [Richardston], Wiltshire. Their children were Thomas son and heir age 4, and John age 2.
