Though other trees are considered sources, and can be great as clues to finding our ancestors, it is always preferred that we use primary sources like birth certificates, first, then census data, and so. But, if you can only find that tree, list it. We'd rather know where you got your information than not at all. If you hit a roadblock, be sure to ask about it on the G2G forum. Sometimes a new set of eyes can find sources we look over.

And Kings and Queens-believe it or not, most of those are probably already on here! We have a Project:European_Aristocrats project that works diligently to keep profiles up to date on the royalty, aristocracy, and gentry across the ages. Wikipedia is a great source for those, and I think they use Burke's Peerage and Scot's Peerage a lot.

Boy, Michael, you covered more than you know with that post on my page :-)

First, it is always best to post sources, if you can. A quick search on FamilySearch.org will generally produce quite a few if the people are 200 years or younger. You may end up encountering family that is already on the tree, so then you just have to connect your ancestor to them, and check to see if the rest of the family is there like it should be, too. We only want one profile for each person, so if someone is already represented here, we don't want to create a new profile for them. For your family that you knew personally, or your parents knew, you can always list yourself and them as sources, because they are!

Welcome to WikiTree, Michael! I, too, was not diligent with sources when I started my research, but it has actually been kind of fun to go back and revisit them to add now, as I am more aware of small details that make a difference in solving family mysteries.

We have a great DNA project, and the Leaders there can probably help you with your DNA questions. Check out DNA to see what they're up to. They also have a great google+ group, if you use google.

Glad you've found us!

Hi Michael, Learning about DNA testing has been on my to-do list, but sorry to say, I'm still clueless. If you check out the G2G forum the answer may be discussed there or someone surely will have an educated answer if you post your question on the forum. Wish I had the answer, Patt

Sounds like a great project. All the years I have been searching the family tree, I wished I had known about recording all the sources.
