in Low Spen, Durham, England, the illegitimate daughter of Ann Grundy
Her mother married Charles Whitfield and Jane adopted her father's name. In 1861 she was living in Benfieldside, Durham, with her mother and stepfather. [2]
Her stepfather died and her mother remarried: to Robert Bell. Jane was registered with her new stepfather's surname in 1871 living in Shotley Bridge, Durham. [3]
