Rachel Gudger Donaldson was born on August 4, 1821. Her parents were Joseph Young Gudger and Rachel Elizabeth (McRee) Gudger.

Miss Rachel Gudger married John Lawson Donaldson February 13, 1843 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The Marriage Ceremony was officiated by Rev. W.N. Morrison. The Marriage Announcement was published in “The Charlotte Journal” on March 2, 1843.

Rachel Gudger Donaldson's obituary published in "The Charlotte Democrat" states that she was a Godly Woman of Faith and confirms that she was the Granddaughter of the well-known Presbyterian Pastor Reverend (Dr) James McRee.

Her obituary states:

“DIED - On April 10th [1866] in the vicinity of Davidson College, Mrs. Rachel B., wife of John L. Donaldson, Esq., of Iredell County, in the 45th year of her age, leaving, in addition to her afflicted husband, nine children to mourn their irreparable loss. She was a granddaughter of the Rev. Dr. McRee. She was long and favorably known in the community in which she lived, and in her protracted sickness and dying hours she was cheered by the hopes of that Gospel which had been the refuge and the joy of her pious ancestry.”
