Biography

Jean Baptiste Guidry is a descendant of an Acadian

Jean Baptiste Guidry, son of Acadians born in exile Jean Baptiste Guedry and Marie Breaux, was born on 20 January 1786 near current-day St. Martinville, Louisiana under the Spanish regime. His baptism was recorded the following April in the registers at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.^[1]

He was married to Marguerite Semer on 3 June 1806 by the priest of St. Martin of Tours church.^[2]

Jean was widowed in 1849.^[12] In 1850, he was living in St. Martin Parish near the household of his son, Theodule. Theodule's household appears to include siblings Julie and Joseph, but this is uncertain.^[13] The census also shows that he was the owner of five enslaved individuals, all men between the ages of 21 and 30.^[14]

Jean died at 67 years old on 19 June 1853, in St. Martin Parish.^[15]

The 1850 census shows that he was the owner of five enslaved persons.^[14] Their identities have not yet been researched:

- 1 black male, age 22

- 1 black male, age 21

Research Notes

1850 census issues. This profile originally indicated that he was found in Lafayette Parish as Jean Bte Guidry "Sr" at age 70, living with Marie S Hebert (age 72), Joseph Hebert (age 5), and Lameck Richards (age 21). It was also assumed the family of Jean Bte Guidry Jr (age 36) and Marie Hernandez (age 33), found a few entries down on the same page, was his son's family.^[16] There are age discrepancies which is not unusual, but primarily the location and names of other household members don't line up with this family. In addition, other Jean Baptiste Guidrys are known to have lived in Lafayette Parish. These entries probably belong to one of them, and in particular may belong to Jean Baptiste Guidry who married Marie Solange Hebert.
