Rhea Giles last name at birth was Guile. His first name has been spelled Ray, Rhea, Rea and possibly a few other variations. Last name has also been spelled Guile, Giles and Guiles. He was born on 9 Jan., 1766 in Preston Twp., New London Cty., Connecticut Colony[1][2] .
Apparently did military service during the American Revolution[3].
5 Dec., 1793 Rhea was in Schoharie, NY when his son Daniel was born there[4]. By 1795, Rhea and family were living in Sharon, NY where son Andrew was born[5]. In 1794 member of Free Baptist Church, Town of Canajahorie, Montgomery Co. NY 1794-1803 (sent byAlice Zetterstrom) page 5 - Ray Giles listed as a member, 1794, Excommunicated Aug. 8, 1801 - on Page 22, "At a church meeting held 8th day of August 1801, after opening meeting as usual and proceeded to business the church motioned whether it was time to leave Brother Ray Guile and the question being asked it was a union to withdraw the hand of fellowship from him for quarreling and fighting." His wife, Molly, is listed on page 4 as a member in 1794, is noted (undated) "Withdrawed the hand of fellowship for neglect of travel, breach of covenant."
17 Aug., 1811 Rhea was in Otsego County, NY.[6]. Apparently he and some of his relatives were deep in debt and their property was seized.
By 1844, Rhea or Ray as sometimes known, was living in Jay Twp., Elk Cty., PA. He was listed along with son Palmer as a resident tax payer[7]. In the election of 27 Feb., 1844 Ray Guile was elected one of the election inspectors[8].
He passed away on 7 January 1854 in Chatham, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania[9][10].
Otego, Otsego Cty., NY[12]. This could match up with Rea and wife 26-45, 3 boys under 10, 3 boys 10-16,and 1 girl under 10. I do not have the 2 boys 16-26 identified, but speculate they are two sons of Joseph, that Joseph is the man 26-45 with sons Leonard and-----------? and no wife.
Burleigh #227 - born Preston, Conn., moved to Schoharie Co. NY. then to Tioga Co. PA. "He died at Deerfield, Tioga Co. PA." Shows b. 9 Jan 1766.
See Appendix - "The Guiles of Preston in the American Revolution" for details of his parents and family, and his military service. His declarations of his military service are shown there, and are some of the most HUMOROUS and interesting of all records studied. After the war, he was in Schoharie Co., then Otsego Co. in 1810-1820, and had moved to Tioga Co. PA by 1850 with most of his family.

(In 1800 AIS for Otsego Co., there is a John Gile and 6 Guild - Benjamin,Daniel, Elijah, Felix, Israel, and Samuel Jr.)
Note - in Otsego Co. file, Freeman's Journal 1829 (Sept 21), a Gilbert Giles of Sharon, Schoharie Co. married in Albany Margaret Hewson. and in 1834 in Sharon, Philena Giles married Truxton Foster.
Researcher Violet Fallone, Montgomery Co. NY sent faint copy of page 52 of apparently a history of Otego, Otsego Co. NY - "The year following 1810(?) saw very hard times as no crops could mature(?) in that "year without a summer". Many people went hungry. It is said that a man and his wife named Antis actually starved to death in the vicinity of the Dan Guile farm." (Town was formed in 1796 from the eastern part of Unadilla; Laurens was formed from the northern part of town in 1810.)

Declaration on behalf of Henry Gile #502 in file made by a Ray Gile who had known him since boyhood, dated 15 Oct. 1832, says he was 72 years old, resident of the town of Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY. Given in Cooperstown, Otsego Co. Possible connection. Pension application. Henry was Rea's brother.
Researcher Marjorie Strang, Eldred, PA supplied d. info. and "Ray (Reah) Guiles rem. to Chatham Twp. and died there. Farmer; large amount of land; Westfield Colonial army during the Revolutionary War. Ch: Asa and Sallie, twins; Eddie, Daniel, 1 d. inf."
Bio of Martin L. Gile, Rin #5721, says that his father, Andrew, b. 1774, was son of Ray Guyle - "the young man who ferried his mother across the river during a Tory raid, under fire, lighted by their burning buildings." Since Rea would have been only 8 to 14 years old (b. 1760-1766), he could not have been the father of Andrew, he would have been the elder brother.
1850 census AIS Index shows a Ray Gile in JEF-- Co. PA. Snyder Township. Not this one, next county south of Elk Co. above.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rea by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rea:
