Genealogical & Family History of Western New York" 974.79 C981-V1 shows name, no birth date. In searching for a father for James Thomas Guiles, I found - 1820 Census for Ellisburg, William Guile. 3-0-0-0-1-0//1-1-0-1-0 3 males under 10, 1 male 26-45; 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45

William was also on the list of Pioneer Settlers for Olean in 1820. Olean is a village by Bridgewater.

NOTE: What would it mean for him to have been on the Pioneer list?

William above b. 1775-1794; 3 males b. 1810-1819; 1 female b. 1800-1804, 1 female b. 1810-1819

Does not fit with James Thomas Guiles (he is too young - b. 1834 ) but does fit with Angeline b. 1816. No William on 1830 census.

Concerning the 1820 item for Orleans, I searched for it again and found this, but it did not bear the clear date of 1820, which must be on another list History of Orleans, New York; FROM OUR COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE, A DESCRIPTIVE WORK ON JEFFERSON COUNTY, NEW YORK; EDITED BY: EDGAR C. EMERSON; THE BOSTON HISTORY COMPANY, PUBLISHERS 1898

181(?) - probably 1819: " In that year he made contracts of sale to many persons who were then or soon afterward actual settlers, among them Asa Hall, Richard Taylor, Frederick Avery, Benjamin and John Taylor, Solomon Stowell, Samuel Linnel, Roderick C. Fraser, Lester White, William Collins, Jr., Leonard and Blake Baldwin, John B. Collins, Isaac Mitchell, Ebenezer Eddy, John Smith, Thomas and Shepard Lee, Thomas Lee, Jr., Wm. Guile, Wm. Larrabee, Ebenezer Scoville, Henry Arnold, Warren Hall, John Page and Ambrose Adams." (skip a paragraph) Thus is presented to the reader the names of many of the first settlers in what is now Orleans, but at best the list is imperfect, for in no town in the county was there so much uncertainty in possession and occupancy as on Penet's Square, on account both of the character of the settlement and the question concerning the validity of the titles.

Here is the source for the 1820 item "Pioneers of Orleans, Jefferson County, New York in 1820": http://www.rbinforesearch.com/htm_JeffersonCounty2.htm

Town of Orleans

Many settlers were squatters and didn't own titles to the land. Many came from the Mohawk Valley and developed good farms, but refused to answer to demands from La Farge, and left.

William Guile (Included in 68 listings many of which had more than one name.)

LDS IGI shows a William Gile having a daughter christened at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania on 29 September 1797.
