Biography

Note

Note: Burleigh #254.
!In 1860 when his will was settled, widow Catherine had 7 children, but the records name only John, Henry, Peter.
!Speculation that the John Guile who died in Chester Co. PA (will dated 15 Dec.1841, proved 29 May 1845) is the same person as the son John (Burleigh 254) of Abel Guile, (Burleigh #94.)
!Index to Chester Co. Abstracts of Wills and Administrations - Guile, John.East Nantmeal, 1845. Sent for it 3/25/96 Was it this John?? #25681 In 1800 census AIS for Chester Co. PA, there is a John Giles 00010-10110 -which would give him age 26-45, b. 1755-1774 - that fits. History of Lancaster Co. shows a William Guiles b. 1795 Chester Co. #802 -could be his son.
 !1820 census
!Name: Jno Guile Township: East Nantmeal County: Chester State: Pennsylvania
!1820 census AIS Owego, Broome co. NY p. 033, name John Guiles.  ?? Only Owego. If correct, his brother Beriah followed him there in 1828.
!1840 census lists his brother Beriah (Uriah) Guile in Owego, Tioga Co. NY.Also 1850, 1855. No John.
 !1800 census Index - Giles, John - p. 893 - Chester Co. Penn. 00010-10110.Male 26-45 - with two daughters 1 under 10, 1 10-16. If 10-16 a daughter, then married by 1789. His age 26-45, b. 1755-1774 e.g. 1770 looks possible.
!1771 Tax Transcript for Chester Co. - no Gile/Giles listings.
!1790 census - only a listing in Bucks Co. for a William Giles with 1 male over16 and 1 female.
!Is John a brother to William Guiles b. 1795 Chester Co. - Rin #802?
!Index to Chester Co. Abstracts of Wills and Administrations - Guile, John..East Nantmeal, 1845. Sent for it 3/25/96
!Will dated 15 Dec. 1841, written by _______?, signed by John Guile, leaves to wife Catharine (after payment of debts, funeral expenses, etc.) "the full useof my real estate during her natural life, or so long as she shall remain mywidow"..."she is to have firewood off the said same sufficient for her use withrails sufficient to keep the improved land in fence"..."all personal property"..."after the decease of my said wife, sell and dispose of all my realestate"..."and also to make sale of any of my personal property that may remainunsold" Item I give ...[remaining] moneys .. to be equally divided among my childrenshare and share alike, except my son Henry who is to have one hundred dollarsmore out of my estate than any one of my other children."...Proved 29 May 1845. July 18, 1859, the executor of the will, George Lloyd, petitions theOrphan's Court for discharge from his office of Executor, since "Real estate ofsaid testator at the time of his decease consisted of three lots or pieces ofland, two of them wood or sprout(?) land, and the other improved land on whichthe testator and his family resided at the time of his decease. And hispersonal estate consisted of some very common and plain household furniture and ordinary farming implements and one cow. That the said testator left living his said widow Catharine, who stillremains his widow and seven children all of age, who are also still living, two with the said widow on said improved lot and the others elsewhere, that all the debts of the testator (if any) with the funeral expenses were paid by the widow, who also furnished money to pay the expenses proving the will and granting letters thereon as aofresaid, that the widow continues to reside on the said improved lot after the decease of her said husband and kept and retained the whole of the personal estate, none of which ever came into the possession of the petitionery. As the widow was entitled under the will to the personal estate after the debts, funeral and other expenses were paid and the same having been paid by the widow, the petitioner did not deem it necessary to file an inventory of the personal estate and none was filed." He lived now in Montgomery Co. PA, was 72 years of age "and a defective memory.." Oct. 10, 1860, the Executor John Miller provided accounting, receipts fromsale of land - $393.38; sale of personal property - $28.64; Rent rec'd $2.50.Disbursements to Henry Gile $13.64, to Peter Gile $378.65,(for bills paid);balance expenses.  !From: (name and email withdrawn)
I am still looking for proof of a connection between my Guiles family in PA (John Guiles d. 1845 E Nantmeal PA) and Abel Guiles of Rennselear Co NY and hence to the Guiles of Haverhill MA. Many years ago I asked my uncle b. 1925 where his Pennsylvania Guiles relations had come from. He said New York. Of course that is a suggestion and not proof.

Replied with commentary from above conclusions, plus comments on Rev War service of older brothers, but none for Abel.

!Subject: Re: PML Search Result matching gile From: xxxx I believe Rebecca Dasher m John Gile sometime after 1791 in PA. Any help?
 !From: xxxx
I am afraid I don't have any information on Rebecca marrying a Gile. I mention it in my Dasher book, as a possibility, but I did not say where it came from and I can't remember what happened last week let alone 15 years ago. We might have seen something in a deed transfer, an Orphans Court transaction or in a will that led us to think that was a strong possibility. We do have a Hannah Giles who married a James Dasher (my great-grandfather)on 12/26/1867 in Frankstown, PA. She was born in 1840 and died in 1921. She had a brother Edward Giles.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
