Martha Guile was baptised 22 October 1777 in Billingshurst, Sussex, England. Her mother was Judith Guile. Judith was unmarried. [1][2]
Early Years
Martha was one of six siblings all born out of wedlock. Martha's mother Judith died having given birth to her sixth child leaving Martha an orphan at the age of 7 years.
Children
Martha, like her mother, remained unmarried but had the following children:
Levi Wadey Guile baptised 28 October 1798 in Billingshurst [3]
James Guile baptised 3 April 1803 in Billingshurst [4]
William Guile baptised 18 August 1805 in Billingshurst [5]
John Guile baptised 31 March 1811 in West Chiltington [6]
Levi Wadey Guile was probably the son of Levi Wadey of Billingshurst.
James was probably the son of James Luxford. There is a warrant for James Luxford, putative father issued 18 December 1802 in Billingshurst, Sussex[7]. Martha Guile of Pulborough was placed under a removal order on the same day but does not seem to have complied as James was born in Billingshurst.[8].
William was probably the son of John Smith who was served a bastardy order on 5 October 1805[9]
John's father has yet to be identified but Martha was served with a removal order from Wisborough Green on 5 January 1811[10]
