TIMARU HERALD, VOLUME CII, ISSUE 15569, 30 JANUARY 1915, PAGE 3 ROSS—GUILFORD. A very pretty wedding was celebrated at Chalmers Church, Timaru, on January 6th, when Miss Elsie Ross, daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Ross, was married to Mr William Guilford, son of the late William Guilford and Mrs Guilford, of Tarata. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. E. R. Harries. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in an ivory satin dress with overdress of creme lace, and the customary veil and orange blossom, and carried a sheaf of Christmas Lilies. The bridesmaid, Miss Alice Guilford, sister of the bridegroom, was dressed in pale blue flowered silk with over-dress of creme lace, and carried a sheaf bouquet. The best man was Mr William Ross, brother of the bride. After the ceremony, afternoon tea was partaken of by a number of guests, and the usual toasts were proposed and responded to. The present of the bridegroom to the bride was a pearl pendant, and to the bridesmaid a cameo ring. The bride's present to the bridegroom was a travelling bag. The happy couple left for the south, where the honeymoon was spent. They were the recipients of many useful and handsome presents, including cheques from numerous friends.[2]
He died 9 June 1938, New Plymouth, Taranaki aged 50 years. [6]
TIMARU HERALD, VOLUME CXLIV, ISSUE 21066, 18 JUNE 1938, PAGE 21 (SUPPLEMENT) MR W. J. GUILFORD - The death occurred at his residence, Egmont Village, last week, of Mr William John Guilford, aged 50. Mr Guilford was born at Geraldine, and at the age of 15 went to Taranaki with his parents, where they farmed a block of land at Tarata. Later he returned to the South Island and worked on the railways at Lyttelton. When 27 he married Miss Elsie May Ross, of Timaru, and five years later decided to return to Taranaki and go on the land at Egmont Village. During his residence at Egmont Village Mr Guilford was actively associated with every good cause for the determent of the district. For many years as a member of the hall committee he rendered very valuable service, and for the last 10 years he had been secretary of the school committee, of which he proved to be a capable officer. A man of many sterling qualities and of a genial disposition, Mr Guilford endeared himself to all who were associated with him. For the past three years he has had very indifferent health, while for the last six months he had been confined to his bed. The district’s deepest sympathy is extended to his widow, son, Mr Ross Guilford, and daughter, Miss Dulcie Guilford.[3]
Buried 11 JUN 1938. New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. [7][8]
