Biography

William was born about 1838. He was the son of John Guilford and Ann Plank.

After arriving in New Zealand in 1851, he was employed first by John Hay at Pidgeon Bay and afterwards by Caverhill at Double Hill Station.

William next bought a bush section from the Maoris between Kaiapoi and Woodend and started pit sawing and getting fencing and firewood for sale.

The bush became worked out so went on to Arowhenua and Pleasant Valley Bushes.

In 1859 he went to Victoria doing bushwork and mining and on his return in 1862 he again worked in the Geraldine district.

1865 William went to the Hokitika and on his return had the hotel at Pleasant Valley, Geraldine.

He married 23 Aug 1866, Waitohi Flat, Temuka to Ann Benbow (1849 Burford - 1930 New Plymouth) the daughter of Wm and Mary Benbow (arr. "Huntress" 1863) of Waitohi. [1]

The Guilfords had 16 children and adopted two.

In 1881 they were living in Waimate, Canterbury.[2]and in 1893 they were in Pleasant Valley, Canterbury.[3]

Their farm was next to St Anne's Church and they left in 1902 to live at Tarata, Taranaki where William is buried.

He passed away 30 October 1906, Tarata, Inglewood, Taranaki. [4][5]

LYTTELTON TIMES, VOLUME CXVI, ISSUE 14230, 28 NOVEMBER 1906, PAGE 1 GUILFORD.—October 23. 1906, at Tarata, Taranaki, William Guilford; aged sixty eight years. Eldest son, of the late John Guilford, Papanui Road. Arrived in Lyttelton in ship Castle Eden, February 7, 1851.[1]

OBITUARY. LYTTELTON TIMES, VOLUME CXVI, ISSUE 14230, 28 NOVEMBER 1906, PAGE 7 Mr William Guilford, an old resident of Canterbury, died at Tarata, Taranaki, on October 29. Mr Guilford was a son of the late Mr John Guilford, of Papanui, and was brought to Canterbury by his parents in 1851, when, he was thirteen years old. After working for the late Mr Hay, on Banks Peninsula, and at Motunau Station in the late Mr J. S. Caverhill’s time, he was engaged in pit-sawing at the Maori Bush, near Kaiapoi, and at Arowhenua. The Victorian gold diggings attracted him, and he spent, some time in Victoria, returning in 1863 to undertake digger’s work on the West Coast. In 1866 he married and began, farming at Pleasant Valley, near Geraldine. About four years ago he sold out, and removed to Taranaki, where he continued farming until his death. He leaves a wife and a family of twelve children, all grown up.[2]
