He usually spelled his name Gwin or Guin.

Samuel Gwin enlisted on 14 July 1863 in Company E, Arkansas 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War at the age of 19. This regiment was very active in Arkansas and Missouri until it was mustered out on 20 August 1865. These engagements included the Battle of Mine Creek, the Battle of Marmiton River, the Second Battle of Newtonia, the Battle of Upshaw Farm,
