Capt John Grattan Guinness was born on 1 September 1783, his father, Arthur, was 57 and his mother, Olivia, was 41. He married Susannah Hutton and they had four children together. Christened at Beaumont, Dublin on 1 Sept 1783. He then married Jane Mary Lucretia Cramer and they had four children together. He served in India then reurned to Dublin.Heading what is known as the Missions Branch of the family .He died on 3 March 1850 in Gloucestershire at the age of 66, and was buried in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

John Grattan Guinness gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Honourable East India Company Service. He two sons and three daughters by his first wife, all of whom died without issue, and anotjher son and a daughter by his second marriage, both of whom were childless.
