Harriett Ellen Guinness was born on 28 November 1839 in County Sligo, Ireland. Her father Reverend William Newton Guinness of the famous Guinness brewing family was aged 29, and her mother, Harriette Le Poer Trench, was 27 years of age. Notice of her birth was printed on page 3 of the Roscommon and Leitrim Gazette dated 30 November 1839:
Sadly her mother Harriette died in about November 1839, in or soon after childbirth. Her father remarried, to Elizabeth Percival. She died in 1845, and he remarried for a third time, to Harriet Frances Day, on 24 February 1852.
In 1855 Harriett sailed from Liverpool, England to Melbourne, Australia with her father, her stepmother Harriet and her three siblings Zara, Henry and Arthur, along with one servant, aboard the ship Shalimar under Captain A. Robertson. They departed from Liverpool on 20 July 1855, and arrived into Hobson's Bay on 16 October 1855[2].
At some stage she returned to the United Kingdom, and went on to marry Brabazon John Barlow on 5 June 1866 at St. Luke's, St. Helier's, Jersey, Channel Islands. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 26 of the Home News for India, China and the Colonies dated 11 June 1866:
They had four children during their marriage.
Her father William died on 5 April 1894 in Ireland at age 83.
Her husband Brabazon died on 13 March 1900.
In the 1901 England Census enumerated on 31 March 1901, Harriet Ellen Barlow (aged 78) was recorded as a Visitor in the household of Joseph William Collings (50, Sewing Machine Salesman) and his wife Matilda Sarah Collings (51) in Grosvenor Street, St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. Also in the household was her unmarried daughter Ada Olivia Barlow (40)[4].
Harriett Ellen Guinness died on 22 January 1931 at the age of 92, and was buried with her late husband at Dover (Saint James) Cemetery, Old Charlton Road, Dover, Kent, England[5]. Her Will was proved on 18 May 1931 at London, Middlesex, England[6].
