The following was printed in The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.: 1848 - 1957), dated Friday, 26 August 1927, page 14:
DEATH OF MR. E. J. D. GUINNESS.
Regret will be felt particularly in legal circles, at the death of Mr. E. J. D. Guinness, L.S.O., which occurred at his home in Malvern road, Malvern, on Wednesday. Mr. Guinness, who was aged 70 years, was Crown solicitor for Victoria for 37 years. He retired from that position in March, 1928.
A son of the late Rev. W. Guinness, the first incumbent of Christ Church, South Yarra, Mr. Guinness was born in that suburb on March 11, 1857, and entered the State public service in December, 1872. He resigned in 1887 to engage in private practice as a solicitor, but re-joined the service on July 1, 1889, the date of his appointment as Crown solicitor. Altogether Mr Guinness was associated with the Law department for more than half a century, his first appointment being as associate to Mr. Justice Fellows. In recognition of his services to the State, the Imperial Service Order was conferred upon him in 1903. Under him, and aided by his counsel and example, many men who made their mark in the Commonwealth and State legal arenas were trained. Expressing regret at Mr. Guinness’s retirement last year, the then Attorney General, (Mr. F. W. Eggleston) paid a unique tribute to his service to the State. He said: - "Aided by wide legal attainments, his experience in all phases of departmental practice was so great as to have become almost intuitive. His unswerving loyalty to the Government was so happily combined with an equally unswerving loyalty to the spirit of the law and the high traditional ideals of the legal profession as to have made him an unusually safe mentor in the complexities of the ordinary law, in administrative difficulties, and in the obscure mazes of prerogative. His unfailing courtesy and kindness endeared him as a man to other members of the legal profession, to his colleagues of the public service, and to all with whom he came in contact; and his indefatigable industry was an asset to the State, which was honoured by his unselfish service."
Mr. Guinness leaves a widow and two sons. One of his sons is Mr. E. T. Guinness, solicitor, of Quambatook. The other, Mr. J. Guinness, lives in Western Australia.
Edward was buried at St Kilda Cemetery, Dandenong Rd, St Kilda East, Port Phillip City, Victoria, Australia[3]. PLOT: Church of England, Compartment A, Grave 16
