He gained the rank of Captain in 1869 in the Seaforth Highlanders.
He fought in the Afghan War between 1878 and 1880, where he was mentioned in despatches.
Charles gained the rank of Major in 1880; the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1881; the rank of Colonel in 1885.
He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1887.
He was Commander of the 83rd Regimental District between 1889 and 1890.
He passed away in 1894 at the age of 55, unmarried.[1]
