Biography

Charles I, duke of Aumale (1555-1631), was a member of the Guise family and supporter of the Catholic League.

He married his first cousin, Marie d'Elbeuf. They had several children but only two daughters survived infancy. The eldest, Anne (1600-1638) became duchess of Aumale.

Following the defeat of the League, he left France and died in exile in Brussels.

Charles de Lorraine, duc d'Aumale, Pair et grand veneur de France, gouverneur de Picardie, était le fils de Claude de Lorraine, duc d'Aumale, et de Louise de Brézé. Il naquit le 25 janvier 1555[1].

Il épousa le 10 novembre 1576 sa cousine, Marie de Lorraine-Elbeuf[1], dont cinq enfants:

  1. Charles de Lorraine (1580), non marié, mort à Bruxelles
  2. Henri de Lorraine, mort jeune
  3. Marguerite de Lorraine, morte sans être mariée
  4. Anne de Lorraine, duchesse d'Aumale, mariée à Henri de Savoie-Nemours
  5. Marie de Lorraine, mariée à Ambroise Spinola[1].

Charles d'Aumale mourut en exil à Bruxelles en 1631[1].
