Biography

Francisco Guito was born August 17, 1832 in Spain. The death record of his daughter Amelia states her father was Francisco Guito, born in Barcelona, Spain, which is the largest city near where he was born. His children's passport applications stated his name (Francisco Guito) and birthplace (Spain). In every census his children said their father was born in Spain. His age in the 1885 census suggests he was born in 1832-1833 but his death record implies 1830-1831.

Information from his baptism record: Name: Francisco Jose Bernardo Guito Gorgoll; Birth Date-17 Aug 1832; Gender: Male; Christening Date: 18 Aug 1832; Christening Place: LLAGOSTERA, GERONA, SPAIN; Father's Name: Francisco Guito; Mother's Name: Maria Gorgoll; Paternal Grandfather's Name: Francisco Guito; Paternal Grandmother's Name: Maria Yglesias; Maternal Grandfather's Name: Felipe Gorgoll; Maternal Grandmother's Name: Margarita Ballell [1]

Francisco Guito married Rafael Hidalgo Gato about 1867 in Cuba. His wife Rafaela stated in the 1900 US census that she had been married for 25 years, and Francisco died in 1892, which suggests they were married about 1867. Their oldest child seems to have been born in 1868, based on the 1885 Florida State census (see below). [2] In the 1885 census, their oldest son was born about 1868, which also suggests they were married in 1867.

Francisco "Vito" (Guito) appeared at age 53 (b~1832) in the 1885 Florida State census on Whitehead Street in Key West, Florida. He was born in Spain, his occupation was "Manager Cig Facty", and both his parents were born in Spain. [3]
The census transcription lists 5 other people ahead of Francisco in the household, but the census image shows that those 5 people belonged to the previously listed household. That was one of many errors in the text and the transcription of this census record.
Listed in Francisco's household were:
- Francisco "Vito", 53 (b~1832), born in Spain, father-Spain, mother-Spain
- Rafaela "Vito", 36 (b~1849), wife, born in Cuba, father-Cuba, mother-Cuba
- Benito "Vito", 17 (b~1868), son, born in Cuba, father-Spain, mother-Cuba
- Guielia "Vito" (Amelia), 15 (b~1870), daughter, born in Cuba, father-Spain, mother-Cuba
- Gillermo "Vito" (Guillermo), 14 (b~1871), son, born in Cuba, father-Spain, mother-Cuba
- Gonzalez "Vito" (Gonzalo), 12 (b~1873), son, born in Cuba, father-Spain, mother-Cuba
- Maria "Vito", 10 (b~1875), daughter, born in Cuba, father-Spain, mother-Cuba
- Amanda "Vito" (Armando), 9 (b~1876), son, born in Cuba, father-Spain, mother-Cuba
The 1885 census is the only known record that shows all of Francisco Guito's family together.

Francisco Guito died June 21, 1892 in Key West, Monroe, Florida. He was buried in the Key West cemetery.[4]

Francisco Guito's burial record at the Key West cemetery shows his name, his sex, the place and dates of death and burial, his age at death, and cause of death. The record shows that he was born in Spain and died June 21, 1892 in Key West at age 61 (birth about 1831), He lived in Key West, Florida, he was married, and he died of "CIRR. HEPATITIS". [4]

There is a photograph, in a family collection, of two seated young men with an older man standing behind them, On the back is written in Spanish "Guillermo Guito y Tato su hijo y su Tio Narciso" (Guillermo Guito and Tato his son and his Uncle Narciso). One of the seated young men matches a photograph of Francisco Guito's grandson Rafael H. Guito, the son of Guillermo Guito. A naturalization record was found with a picture attached, showing the same man who was standing in the group picture. The record shows he was "Narciso Guito y Prats", born in Spain in 1864.
This evidence shows that Francisco Guito had a brother, Narciso Guito. [5]

There is now enough evidence that shows this Francisco Guito is the same person as
Francisco Jose Bernardo Guito Gorgoll.

The father of Francisco J. B. Guito Gorgoll, Francisco Joan Narcis Guito, married Maria Gorgoll in 1831. Their children would have used the surnames "Guito Gorgoll". Their first son Francisco was born in 1832.

He later married Maria Prats in 1855. Their children would have used the surnames "Guito Prats" or "Guito y Prats", like the brother of this Francisco Guito. They might have named a son "Narciso", after the father's third name Narcis, although a record of that birth has not been found yet. There are records showing that they a had children born in 1856, 1858, 1860, and 1862. Narciso was born in 1864 so he could have been their next child.

A descendant (Randall Woodbury) of this Francisco Guito has a DNA match with person who's ancestors include one with the surname "Gorgoy" with origin in Spain. In Spanish, "Gorgoy" and Gorgoll" have exactly the same pronunciation.

Information from his baptism record: Name: Francisco Jose Bernardo Guito Gorgoll; Birth Date-17 Aug 1832; Gender: Male; Christening Date: 18 Aug 1832; Christening Place: LLAGOSTERA, GERONA, SPAIN; Father's Name: Francisco Guito; Mother's Name: Maria Gorgoll; Paternal Grandfather's Name: Francisco Guito; Paternal Grandmother's Name: Maria Yglesias; Maternal Grandfather's Name: Felipe Gorgoll; Maternal Grandmother's Name: Margarita Ballell [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Francisco by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Francisco:
