Ferdinand (or Fernendus) Gulick was born Nov. 15, 1756 in Sussex Co., NJ. He married Hannah Bell Leigh (Lee) (b. July 26, 1755 or 1758; d. Oct. 2, 1820) in 1779 (or 1780) and they had children named Jessie, Samuel, Joseph, John, Amos, Elisha, Daniel, Stephen, William, Mary (Polly), Anna, and Rhoda.[1]
Ferdinand served in the Revolutionary six different times; two months in 1775 under Capt. Sherrard, NJ; one month as a private under Capt. Chris. Johnson; one month in 1775 as a private under Capt. Gronindyke and Col. Chambers; one month as a private in 1778 as a private under Capt. Daniel Brink; one month in 1778 as a private under Capt. Henry Gulick and Col. Beavers; and four months in 1781 as a private under Capt. Henry in Va. He is included in the DAR records (Lineage Book Vol. 149, p. 180). No doubt his service record in the National Archives would give greater details but is known he was in the battle of Millstone Creek, Monmouth Co., NJ. A Pension was Approved 10/27/1832 and a claim was allowed. He came from NJ in Nov. 1778 to Loudoun Co., VA. He and Hannah lived there in 1795. He moved to Hampshire Co., Va., and there remained until the Spring of 1827 when he moved to Muhlenburg Tp., Pickaway Co., Ohio where he applied for his Rev. War Pension on Oct. 27, 1832. Ferdinand died June 4, (prob.) 1836. He is buried in Coleman Hill Cemetery See DAR.[2]
"It has been said by some that Hannah Lee was the sister of Light Horse Lee but this may not be. According to the Lee family Biography and Comp. of Am. Gen. page 685 of Vol. ??, Hannah, Ferdinand's Wife, was born 1775, and Hannah, sister of Light Horse Harry, was born 1766, and married 1787, Corbin Washington, son of John Augustine Washington."[3] Neither one of the persons above is a likely candidate for someone who was married in 1779.
Ferdinand Gulick and Hannah Bell Leigh had 12 known children: Jessie Gulick, 1779–1784; Samuel Gulick, 1779–; Anna Gulick, 1780–1808; Mary Polly Gulick, 1780–1781; Joseph Gulick, 1780–1871; John Gulick, 1783–1854; Amos Gulick, 1783–1858; Elisha Gulick, 1784–1879; Daniel Gulick, 1787–1818; Rhoda M Gulick, 1788–1830; Stephen Gulick, 1792–1846; William Gano Gulick, 1794–1876.
