Edmund Thomas Gulledge, Jr. NEW HAVEN, CT - Edmund Thomas Gulledge, Jr. died after a long and fruitful life on April 8, 2014 in Winder, GA. He was born in Sumter, SC and was the oldest child of the late E.T. Gulledge, Sr. and Lucy Coulter Gulledge. Ed graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1944, "The Class That Never Was." The entire class was called to join the fight in World War II. He returned and graduated from The Citadel in 1946 and continued his love of and association with The Citadel for his entire life. Ed served as President of The Brigadier Club and he was Chairman of the Brigadier Foundation Memorial Fund for 16 years. He served as President of the Horry County Citadel Club for three terms and received the Member of the Year Award in 1999 for Life Long Service to the Citadel and the Horry County Citadel Club. During WWII, Ed served as 2nd Lieutenant of the 86th "Blackhawk" Division (honored as a "Liberation Unit") and then as Rifle Company Commander in both the European and Pacific (where he was Company Commander) theaters. After the Division disbanded in 1946, he continued to serve as Regimental Instructor of the Philippine Scouts. Decorations included the Good Conduct Medal, Expert Marksman Award, European Campaign Ribbon with three battle stars, the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart with cluster, the Asiatic Campaign Medal, and others. In 1946, Ed married Helen Cline Thomas in the Citadel Chapel with General Charles P. Summerall, President of the Citadel, in attendance. Ed and his wife had three daughters, Helen Sherrill Ellis, Ann Brandon Scott, and Holley Thomas Rogers. Ed loved his family, his country, and The Citadel. He will be remembered by his family as a hard working, "big picture" thinker and for his unending generosity. He loved baseball, peach icecream, and the outdoors.
