Biography

Brooks Jay Gum


Brooks Jay Gum, 85, of Indian Fork Road New Milton passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2011 in Salem Care & Rehabilitation Center Salem following an extended illness. He was born at Roberts Fork in Doddridge County in a log cabin on October 28, 1926: son of the late Henry Brooks Gum and Charlotte R. (Cole) Gum. Mr. Gum married Edwina L. Burkhammer in 1977, who survives of Weston.

Mr. Gum is also survived by three step children: Debbie Thomas of North Carolina, Holly Perry of Buckhannon and Dean Burkhammer of Weston and 5 step grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother: Joe Gum of New Milton, three sisters: Pauline Hall of West Union, Mary Stats of Weirton and Eleanor Nicholson of New Milton, 13 nieces and nephews and a very special friend: Ron “Curly” Carder. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gum was preceded in death by one brother John Gum and two infant brothers.

Mr. Gum became a farmer and oilfield worker. He worked for P & M Oil Company for 13 years and Consolidated Gas Company for 20 years as a driller, tool dresser and bailing machine operator from 1969 to 1989.

Mr. Gum graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1947. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he entered in 1950 and served in the 518th Combat Engineering in Austria and Germany from 1951 to 1952 and was discharged in 1956.

Mr. Gum was a member of the Avon Church of New Milton for 72 years from 1939 to present, where he was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. He was a life long Democrat, Atlanta Braves Fan, loved tractors, trucks and John Deere dozers. He loved his dog Old Yellow, was a member of the NRA, WV Sheriff’s Association, Doddridge County Farm Bureau, USFA Veteran Association and the VFW #3408 of West Union.

Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Monday, November 7, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a,m, from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Bob Swiger officiating. Interment will follow services in the Loth Cemetery on Roberts Fork in New Milton, WV. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Lewis County Honor Guard.
