Biography
James Lambert Gumbleton was baptised 5 Mar 1777 at Lewes, Sussex, England. He was named after one of the two painters, both called James Lambert. James Lambert, the elder being James Lambert Gumbleton's great uncle.
James Lambert Gumbleton followed his father’s trade as a woolstapler (ie a wool merchant), and appears as such in various poll books for Hythe, Kent, between 1807 and 1819[1] although, by that time, he had moved to London. The fact that he continued to have voting rights in Kent suggests that he continued to own property there, even after moving to London.
He was married on 5 Aug 1798 at St George, Southwark, by licence, to Mary Ann Bayly.
Rate books for 1821 list James L Gumbleton in Rose Court, Bermondsey. By 1837, he was living in Church Row, Southwark, where he was assessed for Land Tax and required to pay 1s 4d, based on his rent of £18 per annum.[2]
In 1841, James and MaryAnn were living in Church Row, in the parish of St John, Horseley Down, Bermondsey, with two of their children, their son-in-law-to-be, George Livens, and a draper’s assistant who was perhaps a lodger. James was described as a bookkeeper.[3]
James Lambert Gumbleton died in the St Olave Registration District, Southwark, Surrey, in the March Quarter of 1845.[4] His will, proved in 1846, made his widow, Mary, the sole executrix.[5]
