Biography

Titus Gunn is a part of US Black heritage.

Titus M. Gunn was born about 1841[1] in Columbus County[2], New York or Ohio[3][4][5][6]. He was the child[3] of Ruth and Gabriel Gunn. He, his brother Benjamin and his stepbrother Charles T. Way all served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

In 1860, he is attending school in or near West Stockbridge, Massachusetts.[4]

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company C of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[7] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 22 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 9 May 1863 from Columbia County, New York. He mustered out with his regiment on 20 August 1865.[1]

Death

He passed away in 1889 and is buried at Lansingburgh Village Cemetery in Lansingburgh, New York (a part of Troy, New York since 1900.)[8]
