Joseph Gunn was born on October 19, 1772, in the Montague, Hampshire County, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony of the British Empire.[1][2][3] Joseph was the son of Israel Gunn and Mary Root.
On June 13, 1795, Joseph purchased a tract of land in Montague from Samuel Taylor.[4] Two years later, on April 13, 1797, Joseph purchased a tract of 27 acres from his father Israel, also in Montague, for 200 Massachusetts pounds.[5]
On June 11, 1800, Joseph married Annis Sweetser in the town of Wendell, then a part of Hampshire county in Massachusetts.[6][7]
Census data shows that Joseph continued to live in Montague until at least 1830. However, on September 14, 1832, Joseph purchased 125.4 acres of land from Joseph Brown in Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York.[8] Joseph purchased some additional land in Carlisle for $120 from Jesse Seeley on December 19, 1833.[9]
On January 6, 1835, Joseph sold 10 acres of land to a member of his mother's family, Erastus Root.[10] On September 3, 1836, Joseph sold 22 acres & 64 rods of land, a small house, a bedroom, a cow, and 3 sheep to his sister Mary for $200.[11] A few years later, on April 7, 1844, Joseph sold 130 acres of land to his son Levi for $1,000.[12]
