Robert Charles Anderson's profile of Walter Knight is in The Great Migration Begins, volume II, pages 1139-1142, indicates that no evidence was found for the name of any wife for Walter Knight. Knight was married to someone by 1642, as on 28 February 1642/3 he was "presented for not living with his wife." Anderson did not find a name for a wife and says "the claim that she was Ruth Gray is an unsupported guess." As to children, Anderson says "None recorded."
Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 identifies an Elizabeth (last name unknown) as a previous wife for Walter Knight, citing Raymon Meyers Tingley as the only source for this information. Tingley has unfortunately acquired a reputation for having invented some of the dates and people in his genealogy. In view of this reputation and the lack of a record for Knight being married to a woman named Elizabeth, it is necessary to suggest that Elizabeth may be a fabrication.
Elizabeth was born about 1589. She passed away in 1634. [1] She is referenced in many sources in connection to her husband Walter Knight, one of the earliest settlers of the New England Colonies.
