John was born before 20 July 1864 which is the date of his christening. He is the son of Robert Gunner and Elizabeth Burnell. John worked in a cement factory, as did a number of his brothers. John died in Maidstone, Kent in 1920.
Research Note
There appears to be some confusion surrounding John's marital status. Up to and including the 1901 Census, John declares himself to be 'single'. At the 1901 census, he is residing as a 'lodger' in the household of Esther Winch, a widow, along with 5 of her children. Then in the 1911 census, although we see no evidence of any marriage record, John declares that he has been married to Esther for 12 years, and that they have had 3 children from the marriage, 2 of whom have survived. Obviously, these facts do not jive, and we are unable to reconcile them.
