The Gunter Family Monument, erected by Gunter Descendants 2007 [2]

"The Gunter family, headed by Augusta Gunter, Sr., moved from Warren County, Tennessee in c1819 and entered land in Gunter's Cove near the mouth of the Battle Creek. Augusta's children with him at that time were James, Thomas, William, Augusta Jr., and Mary. This enclosure enclosure is the presumed resting place of Augusta Gunter, Sr., who died in 1843, and his wife, whose name remains unknown. Their markers, made of hardwood, have not survived. Augusta's eldest son John moved into the area c1825 and built a home just across the Alabama line next to the Old Stage Road. Although most of Augusta's children moved over time to open up new territories in Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, and beyond, John remained until his death in 1853 when the obelisk in the adjacent enclosure was raised to his memory and the memory of his wife Lavinia and daughters Louisa and Telitha. John's son Augustus and many of his descendants are buried in the Mt Carmel Cemetery, six miles southwest along the Old Stage Road to Stevenson. As these intrepid pioneers endured the cruel hardships of opening up a wilderness and bringing civilization to this beautiful valley, they left an indelible imprint on this tangled land they once called home. It is to these brave souls and with the profoundest respect that we now dedicate this monument."
