After failing to get elected in 1871 and 1874, he was eventually elected as Member of Parliament for South Norfolk in 1880, and for Mid Norfolk in 1885, sitting as a Liberal. He was chairman of Norfolk County Council from its inception until 1902.
In 1891 he and his wife were living at Letton Hall in Cranworth with son Bertram. Muriel was elsewhere.[5]
In 1899 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Cranworth, of Letton and Cranworth in the County of Norfolk. The 1901 census affords him his new styling. Muriel is again elsewhere.[6]
Robert passed away at Letton Hall in 1902 and is buried at Cranworth. His son Bertram succeeded to his estate and title.[7]
