Research Notes

Ancient Planter: "Adria Gurganey Harris" is listed as an ancient planter by the Order of the Descendants of the Ancient Planters. But current research indicates that the wife of Thomas Harris was Adria Hoare, and he claimed 100 acres for her but she herself was not an Ancient Planter.[1]

Adria: The first wife of Thomas Harris, Adria, listed as such in the Jamestown Muster of January 1624/5, residing at Neck of Land,[2] has been determined to be Adria Hoare who arrived in Virginia aboard the Marmaduke in November 1621. This profile is protected to preserve it as a magnet for incorrect profiles for Adria Hoare, the wife of Captain Thomas Harris of Jamestown (Neck of Land). Another Jamestown Thomas Harris (Lt. Thomas Harris of Arthur's Hope) married an Adria who died before September 11, 1626. The WikiTree profile for her is Osborne-575, but no proof of her maiden name. ~ Noland-165 15:47, 12 December 2016 (EST)

Adria, Wife of Captain Thomas Harris

The maiden name of the first wife of Thomas Harris was Hoare, not Gurganey (or Osborne). Her given name is shown as Adria and various spellings of Audrey. She was living in 1627, when she and her daughter, Mary Harris, were named in her father's will.[3]

Adria, Wife of Lt. Thomas Harris

Lt. Thomas Harris is shown in the Virginia list of living and dead (1623/4) as being at "Archur's Hoop" & Thomas Harris and wife are listed at "ye Neak of Land". At the 11 September 1626 witch trial of Goodwife Wright, it was said she foretold that Thomas Harris "should burie his first wiefe being then bethrothed unto him (which cam so to pass)".

"Thomas Harris submitted a deposition in General Court that his wife, Adria, died between the census of 1624 and 1626. This deposition presented by her husband, Captain Thomas Harris, states that he is due land on the account of his deceased wife being an ancient planter." Land Office Book #1, page 615[4]
Note - Additional information about a 1626 census needed (see this G2G question). The February 1623/24 list of living and dead has Lt. Harris at Archur's Hoop and Thomas Harris with wife at Neck of Land. The January 1624/5 Jamestown muster has just the Neck-of-Land Thomas Harris with his wife Adria: Harris-751 and Hoare-184. Profiles for the other Thomas Harris and his wife are Harris-14041 and Osborne-575, but the only research into them that I'm aware of is to show that they are not the same as the Thomas and Adria at Neck of Land.

Wife Adria Theories

Two different theories both quashed by research by J. Phillip Harris:[5]
  • Edward and Ann Gurganey had a daughter Adria who was Thomas Harris's first wife.
  • Edward Gurganey was the step-father of Adria and Joan Osbourne, marrying the widow of their father Thomas, who was a sea captain. Adria was Thomas Harris's first wife and Joan was his second.
Edward Gurganey and his wife Ann died childless. They did not have a daughter named Adria.[6]

Not Adria Gurganey

The wife of Thomas Harris, listed as such in the Jamestown Muster of January 1624/5 at Neck of Land, was the Adria who arrived in Virginia aboard the Marmaduke in November 1621.[7]
She was not the daughter of Edward and Anne Gurgany,[8] who died childless.[5]

Not Sisters

A duplicate profile for the Neck-of-Land Thomas Harris (Harris-2633) had profiles for Adria and Joanne attached as wives - both Gurgunays (different spellings, including Joanne Gurgarny, wife of Thomas Harris[9]).

Research has shown that his first wife was Adria Hoare and his second wife, Joane, was the widow of William Vincent.[10]

Osborne Sisters Theory

Following is apparently from Ancestry (link given at end of this section as source requires a subscription to access).

It appears that the Ship's Captain Thomas OSBORNE had 2 daughters by his wife Anne. One was Adria OSBORNE and the other was Joane OSBORNE (they had a brother named Edward). Anne the widow married 2nd to Edward GURGANEY that owned land next to Thomas HARRIS.
The willing of land from Ann BRIGHT GURGANEY mostly proves the relationship. The marriage of Ann BRIGHT to Captain Thomas OSBORNE never happened; children did.
The daughter of Thomas OSBORNE (unknown spouse) was named Joane OSBORNE and she was the 2nd wife of Thomas HARRIS bearing him 2 sons.
Thomas OSBORNE the Sea Captain also had a son named Edward and possibly another daughter named Adrie/Adria/Agnis which makes it very confusing.
Many have tried to place Thomas OSBORNE as the father-in-law of Capt. Thomas HARRIS of Virginia To date, no one has provided documentation to place him as the father of Adria (first wife) or of Joane (2nd wife).
Here is the information listed:
THE MUSTER OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE COLLEGE-LAND IN VIRGINIA TAKEN THE 23TH OF JANUARY 1624. Lt. Thomas OSBORNE arrived on board the BONA NOVA in November 1619. Source: "Glenn Gohr" ggohr01/[at]/mail.orion.org [This is listed as being in Henrico County VA] --------- Later Thomas HARRIS claimed an inheritance from Edward GURGANEY's estate in the name of his wife Joan or Adria. This would explain the confusion as the three OSBORNE children would be step- children of Edward's and would appear to be his own children to researchers. More Notes

This profile was created as Adria Gurganey (1602-1685), wife of Thomas Harris, with text showing a 1598 christening and 1626 burial.[11]

Birth: 1602, Long Creadon, Bucks, England, United Kingdom[citation needed]
Birth: 1598 in Little Hadham, Hertford, England[citation needed]
Christening: 28 JAN 1598, Little Hadham, Hertford, England[citation needed]
Died 1685, Henrico County, Virginia[citation needed]
Died: 11 Sep 1626 in Henrico County, Virginia; buried SEP 1626, Jamestown, James City, Virginia[citation needed]
September 1626 based on the belief that the death of Thomas Harris's first wife Adria was the foretold death recited in a September 1626 witchcraft trial. That reference was not to the Thomas Harris of Neck of Land.[8]

I wrestled with that. It's explained in the text, but the Order of the Descendants of the Ancient Planters list her as "Adria Gurgany Harris" - see http://www.ancientplanters.org/ancient-planters/

Until that's changed, I think her profile needs to be in the category. Add to that... I don't think Adria (Hoare) Harris qualifies. Her husband obtained the 100 acres she was eligible for, but from what can be determined, she wasn't eligible for the 100 acres in her own right, but as the widow of someone who was.

Isn't the category "Ancient Planter of Virginia" inappropriate on the profile of someone who did not exist?
update 8 June 2020 - actions take (profiles for husband Thomas Harris-30731 and son Robert Harris-30735 detached) and Gurgany-3 merged into Gurganey-1.

please see Gurganey-1. The existence of this person has been disproven.

please detach profiles for husband and son and merge this profile away into Gurganey-1.

Hi! To conform with the recently clarified guidelines (see this G2G post), I replaced the research note box for Disproven Existence with the Disproven Existence project box (required for profiles the project manages).

Cheers, Liz

Parents Osborne-2621 & Bright-1129 aren't hers (there is no Adria Gurganey). However, there may be an Adria Osborne - see Osborne-575 - so I moved them to her.

(There were two Thomas Harrises, m Adrias in Jamestown: "Leftenant Harris" at Archur's Hoop is listed in the 1623/4 muster, with Thomas Harris listed at "ye Neak of Land" & Thomas with Adria, at Neck of Land, are in the 1624/25 muster.)

See Osborne-575 for another Thomas Harris who married another Adria -

Hi Bill! I believe that your Joane Gurganey is one of genealogy's fictional folk. See details on Gurgany-2. You're welcome to merge Gurganey-5 into Gurgany-1 (merge of Gurgany-2 & Gurgany-1 is pending).

I think the best thing for Edward is to detach him from Gurganey-5 & propose a merge with Harris-3815. That's the closest Edward I find to an Edward b 1630 to Joane Gurganey (she's often attached to the Jamestown Thomas Harris; Alice West married into the Crixse Harrises, and since they connect to royalty, lots of trees got "bent" to join them, but the Jamestown Thomas Harris is a different Harris family than the Crixse Harrises.)

Cheers, Liz

Please merge with Gurganey-1. And Robert needs to find his real parents.

See the footnotes on page 265 of John Frederick Dorman's Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5: Families G-P

Thanks!
