Henry Gurney (1721-1777) was the son of John Gurney and Elizabet Hudduck. He was born at Norwich, Norfolk on 23 July (Quaker 5th month) 1721.[1][2][3]
Henry married Elizabeth Bartlett (daughter of Benjamin Bartlett, apothecary, of Bradford, Yorkshire) on 25 October 1749 at Halifax, Yorkshire. The Quaker marriage record describes him as a worsted weaver of Norwich.[4] They had the following children:
Elizabeth, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 7 June (Quaker 4th month) 1750[5][6]
Martha, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 21 November (Quaker 9th month) 1751[7][8]
Lucy, born at Norwich, Norfolk, on 23 August (Quaker 8th month) 1753[9][10]
Sarah, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 14 April 1755[11]
Maria, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 30 January 1758,[14][15] died, unmarried, on 28 March 1804 and was buried at Barking Quaker burial ground, Essex on 3 April (the Quaker death and burial records describe her as a resident of Norwich)[16][17]
In 1770[20] or 1775[21] Henry and his brother John founded Gurney's Bank at 35 Tooley Street (now Pitt Street), Norwich.
Henry and his brother John entered into partnership and formally established Gurney's Bank in 1770 at 35 Tooley Street (now Pitt Street) in Norwich. When Henry died in 1777, he was succeeded by his son Bartlett (1756–1802).[20][22][23]
He died aged 56 on 4 Jul 1777 at Norwich, Norfolk, England and was buried at Norwich Quaker burial ground on 13 July. The Quaker death and burial record describes him as a Norwich banker.[24][25] Henry's Will was dated 22 August 1775 and proved on 28 August 1777. In it he:[26]
