An article in Lithgow Mercury - Monday, April 4, 1978 reads:
DEATH OF CHARLES GURNEY.
Another comparatively young Lithgow husband and father has collapsed and died in Lithgow.
He was Charles Gurney (51) of 8 Suvla Street, Littleton, formerly of Hartley Vale, whose death occurred in Lithgow district Hospital early on Friday morning.
Mr. Gurney had appeared to be in good health until a week before his death when he was admitted to hospital. He was released three days later but collapsed at his home on Wednesday and was readmitted with his unexpected death following some thirty six hours later.
Born at West Wyalong, a son of Charles Albert and Dorothy Gurney, most of his life was spent at Hartley Vale. As a boy aged 2, he moved with his parents to the district, received his education at Hartley Vale and afterwards at Lithgow High School, and following his marriage to Miss Ruth Holt the family continued to live at Hartley Vale before settling in Littleton in 1969.
With the exception of 2 years when he left school to work for a shipping company in Sydney, Charles Gurney had been employed all his working life, and at the time of his decease with the Bowenfels Depot of the Department of Main Roads, where he completed his trade certificate and was employed as a plant mechanic.
His early sporting interests included cricket with Hartley Vale Club but in more recent times he turned his attention towards following and supporting Lithgow Junior Soccer.
However his main interests were centred around his home and family and for a hobby, his interest was model aeroplanes.
He was a member of the Harley Vale Bush Fire Brigade and a member of the City of Lithgow R.S.L. Club.
Sympathy will be extended to his wife, Ruth, his two sons and daughter-in-law, Warren and Glenda (8 Suvla Street, Littleton); Rod and Anne-Marie (2 Wentworth Street, Lithgow), his youngest son, Bruce (14), only daughter, Narelle (11), his three brothers, Ron (14 King Street, Lithgow), Albert (16 Davey Street, Hermitage Flat), Harry (3 Coalbrook Street, Hermitage Flat) his two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Scott (Winston Hills) and Betty Blaker (25 Lane Street, Wallerawang), and his parents-in-law, Harry and Emma Holt.
Mr. Gurney's funeral was scheduled for St. Paul's Church of England, Lithgow, to-day (Monday) at 9am and later at Castlebrook Crematorium, Windsor Road, Rouse Hill with arrival at 11.15am.
Kerry Linegar, funeral director, of Mort Street, has care of arrangements.
He has a Memorial at Lithgow General Cemetery, Bowenfels (Col. F)
